Had some rain over the weekend in Ross - river up by 6mm compared to a week ago, but no more rain for the next 2 weeks and temps upto hgh 20's later this week- we are not fishjing for some time.
It certainly is controlled you should see the fencing (to keep us out as well as them in) and the topography is challenging. It will take some time for mass to occur as only 2 were introduced and if they breed the young will stay for a couple of years...if breeding is successful the plan i...
were illegally introduced - from what you are saying you are obviously happy with this?
Graham - there is a question mark at the end so it is a question and not a statement saying you agree with this - i should have put 'are' before 'you' to make it clearer.
In many ways these forums hide so much if you do not know the individual. When Neil mentioned he was 70 ( belated congrats BTW) I was flabbergasted, I thought, given the posts, 50s at most...before anyone starts I am not suggesting we now have an age guessing game...its just one of those...
Graham thanks for the lengthy reply
Do you believe that Barbel are only indigenous to eastern flowing rivers and before anyone answers please check out the course of the Trent as laid out by cartographers.
Re barbel distribution from a 1990 paper by Alwynne Wheeler et al
The barbel was...
No Graham it is an interpretation of your point which i felt was not clear but seemed to imply that you did not mind non indigenous species being introduced and were aware they impacted on other species... if this is incorrect please explain what you meant as to me this does contradict your...
Graham I do not follow your argument - you are against previouly indigenous mammals being re-introduced on a managed, small scale but seem to be happy that non-indigenous species were introduced to our rivers whatever the consequence. Bizarre. Yes, there are certainly some non-indigenous...
Stephen we closed our stretch of the Wye because the water level is lowest in living memory currnetly 11cm at Ross measuring gauge, not enough to cover a medium sized barbel, there is relatively little flow, water temperatures have been measured at 25 C and there is an increase in algae - so we...
Sorry guys let's not get carried away they are not going to be damming the Wye or Trent any time soon, generally it is small tributaries they inhabit and clearly they had minimal impact in the past...
Graham if one followed your position to its logical conclusion we would have no barbel in many...
Fortunately Graham the riverine environment is for all and not just anglers or others interested solely in country sports - except for otters, which interestingly on the Wye appear to be in balance with fish stocks, what other reintroductions are you refering to...signal crayfish was likley to...
Where this is being introduced is a small stream (it is not fishable) that due, in my opinion to forestry work, has become a drain with a huge culvert and thousands spent on flood alleviation that has not worked leading to Lydbrook experiencing flooding. A few locals came up with the idea and...
That erstwhile conservationist group the Wye and Usk Foundartion still seems to be selling coarse fishing tickets but have suspended salmon fishing...are game fish more suscptible to higher temperatures?
I live a few miles from where they are being introduced - it is a very steep sided Forestry Commission owned/worked valley with high run off to boot leading to flooding in the local villages. Before FC i am told it used to be full of the wildlife you would expect with pools etc - not anymore...
I think if we recorded ourselves out fishing with a mate the banter would be very similar, ridiculous musings on life, surreal observations, humour that we find funny at the time but not all would...as far as i know this is not scripted whereas all the references to comedy above are, plus I do...
True Phil but last year just before the start of the season the river had been up and down at around 1m - not so this year it has been below 0.5m and falling since May 5th - so 9 weeks like this as opposed 4 last year, with the corresponding knock on effect.
Being on the committee, we have been discussing this for a good few days and decided to do with coarse as we have with salmon and appeal to the sensible nature of our members. Of course this weather brings out many to the river so we will be baliffing, in fact, probably more so.
Great picture. Caught up with episode 2 & 3 after reading this thread. Being of simialr age and also having had a 'trauma' I can apprecaite the melancholy and realisation of mortality, which runs through the programme along with the general piss taking that did have me laughing in parts...
