    Reduction in goosanders

It seems strange that a river the environment agency declared to be failing seems more than capable of supporting a large amount of goosander. As for otters, I haven't seen one for around six weeks now. Probably found a carp puddle to raid.

    Reduction in goosanders

One with 10 on the wharfe this morning. The poor things really are on the decline!

    Reduction in goosanders

The one swimming round with 4 chicks was really struggling to survive yesterday on the wharfe, maybe it's her 45 friends that are helping bring them up!

    Stillwater Barbel in the Media

I don't agree with these fish being stocked into still waters. They don't offer anything different to the puddle anglers than a carp so I don't see the point. However, they do manage ok. The problem is keepnets, the answer is to have a separate net for silvers, tench and barbel. That way they...

    Crayfish

We fish a small festival on lock kenn in Scotland. The year before we first went they took 11 tones or crayfish out to try controll them. Despite this it was still a hopeless task trying to fish a feeder, you'd get two at once, one on the feeder the other on your hook! We don't yet have them on...

    unusual baits....

I've had something have a go at a plummet whilst plumbing up on the Trent. Felt just like a bite you'd get touch ledgering and I guess the plummet looked like a big pellet!

    Otter on deadbait

Hi Anthony, I was down at Boston spa about 3 weeks ago, an angler had just had his dead bait ripped into a bush by an otter!

    Spawning barbel

Thanks for the replies. I did think they would travel but wasn't fully sure. I suppose ill leave it a few weeks after the start of the season before I head down that stretch. Give them time to return.

    Spawning barbel

I'm looking to fish a stretch of river this year, it's quite deep and wide and as far as I'm aware has no shallows for fish to spawn on. It's around 8 miles to the nearest gravels upstream. Would the fish travel this far or find another option?

    Boots

Sounds about right Rodger, I'm more than happy with them though. I have some moon boots that I wear when sat all day, these never fail on keeping my feet warm! The muck boots are for my river fishing when I'm much more mobile.

    Boots

Got a pair of Tay's Monday, been out this week in them and they're excellent. Very comfortable and kept my feet warm even when stood in the river all day! The grips are very good, snow, ice muddy banks were no problem. Only downside, I fished sat in one spot all day today and my feet were...

    Remember your first barbel bite?

All my early barbel were caught on the float, we thought it was against our religion to fish anything else on rivers unless fishing for bream! It would be about 3 years later before I had the classic 3ft twitch, just as the light was fading on the nidd. A lovely 3lb fish which almost claimed...

    Snow Barbel

Yea thanks for that, I was planning to fish for grayling tomorrow, now I'm going to have to try for a snowy barbel!! Great write up, plenty of inspiration

a question for the pole fishing gurus !!

Also depends what you want to use the pole for. If its pleasure fishing just to reach the odd island here or there then the extensions will be fine, the clever claw Derek's talking about works well. If its match fishing though you'd be better trying to get hold of a pole built for the length...

    Grayling
