    Reels

Hi Adam. Have you been talking to my wife?? I confess to having a reel for each rod! She can't understand it either! My thinking is (and I would say this wouldn't I) is that each rod/reel combo has to be "balanced". That's my defence, whereas the ACTUAL truth is I just like buying fishing gear 😂

    Split cane rod

Hi Robin. What a lovely post and great memories. I've fished all my life but despite this I don't call myself a talented angler. To me, my fishing days are split between fishing and observing nature. I have had many adventures and some years ago, purely for amusement, I started to jot them down...

    Split cane rod

So pleased my original post has fired off so many memories of those days when split cane rods were commonplace. My B. James rod looks to be in very good condition, no delamination visible and whippings/rings in good order, so may have to give it a go before the end of the season. My first...

    Split cane rod

I have a 2 x piece 10' Richard Walker Mk IV split cane rod by B James and Co. It would be nice to use it for barbel fishing but would it cope with a barbel (if I was lucky enough to catch one) or would it break? Or is it just a "collector's piece" destined to adorne a wall? Do these rods have...

    Travel rod

I think their float rod is about £130 but not sure of TC rating. There are cheaper on the market for sure, my post was purely to show how travel rods are far from "gimmicky" and can handle seriously strong fish.

    Travel rod

The attached photo shows a Tiger Fish caught in Zimbabwe by one of our fishing club members. He used a travel rod bought from Rigged & Ready. I bet their rods could handle a barbel?!

    SONIK Specialist Barbel

"You get what you pay for" was the mantra used by my late father, alluding to the fact that you have to pay a lot of money to get anything decent. I don't agree. I think there are many products (not just angling items) that offer unbelievable value for money. The trick is knowing which ones...

Ah, I see. Would like to take my rods with me on my next visit as the river looks lovely.

Was that taken in Matlock, David? Very similar to a photo I took when I was there last year for a walking holiday with the missus

    Bird flu spreads to otters.

I saw that. Was rather hoping it would knock out the cormorants that forage on our fish stocks in our club lake! 🤞🏻

    VERY Waterproof jacket

Hi Edward, I had to look up "ectomorph"! Never realised a post on waterproof jackets would be so educational. As my late father used to say "you're never too old to learn"! 😂

    VERY Waterproof jacket

Since starting this thread it is clear to me that I failed to think "out of the box!" Over the years I have purchased clothing for fishing from tackle shops. If I had thought about the occupations that have to contend with the British weather all year round, I would have looked at clothing...

    VERY Waterproof jacket

I agree with your comment "you get what you pay for", but looking at the Simms G4 Jacket at £649 I can't help thinking that was about my ANNUAL salary as a bank clerk in the 1960's!!! Ouch

    VERY Waterproof jacket

So, following my New Year Resolution about "going light" when fishing in 2023, that obviously means no brolly! Last time I got caught out in the rain (it is vicious in Norfolk!) I got drenched, despite wearing a "waterproof " coat. So I did some research and discovered the hydrostatic ratings...

River Wye and Poultry Farming again

I would liked to have seen that programme although such items do tend to increase my BP levels 😡. This forum has covered the pollution of the Wye many times but like so many things in life the perpetrators get away with it. Local politicians want to increase local employment (although pre...

    New Year Resolution

My point exactly. I am in my 70's now and have trouble lugging myself around without all the gear as well!! 😂

    New Year Resolution

I'm not a big fan of New Year Resolutions as my ones only last a few weeks! However, I am determined to try a fishing-related one for 2023 and that is to ditch the unnecessary gear I tend to take with me. For 2023 I intend to go fishing with just the gear I need for that session. No "back-up"...

    Happy Christmas

This is the only forum of which I am a member and have to say I am so pleased I joined. Great information, useful hints and tips from other members and most important of all, a good "vibe" to the site. Well done to all those who keep the site going and Seasons Greetings to everyone involved.🎅

Upper Bure today for a bit of drop shotting for perch. Very cold but bright. Realised why it was so quiet when 3 otters popped up nearby!!

    global warming

What a debate! In fairness it IS a subject that is worthy of such discussions. I enjoy reading old books about fishing and the countryside in general. Many of them have references to weather patterns and climate in general. These are not scientific statements, just observations. One comment...
