Hi Paul. I think that's what I was driving at with my original post. Whilst not a brilliant analogy it's like the "canary in the cage" once used by miners to detect fatal levels of gas? Are barbel put off feeding due to their senses picking up something not quite right in their watery home...
Interesting to hear about "the foam" (sounds like the title of a Stephen King novel!) Joking aside, I guessed there is a correlation but on our rivers up here in Norfolk you can't SEE the salt, likewise if in the Wye, if the pollution is invisible to the naked eye, how would you know it's there...
When I moved up to Norfolk many years ago I was keen to fish the big rivers for bream, roach and perch and in the winter months, pike. Long story short, I had many blank days. Chatting to a local guy in my fishing club, he (politely) told me I was a numpty for trying to fish on those occasions...
Thanks David. It was nice of you to reply. As I say, the reels were donated by a club member, so I may bundle them up with some other items of fishing gear and put them into an auction. "Every bit helps" as a famous supermarket once stated!!!
Quick question: A member has donated this Simano multiplier reel and an Okuma multiplier to our fishing club to raise funds (nice gesture). I put them on eBay but lots of "watchers" but no bids. Are these the type of reels that would sell on this site? They're in fair/good condition but have...
Hi Lee, yes I posted that thread in January this year and got 82 replies I think! There were some fantastic suggestions and as I had no idea whether to go "warm but rain proof" or "layered but rain proof" and various other options, I appreciated all the help. I finally decided on layering as we...
Not sure if I've posted this in the correction section but I would appreciate some advise on wading belts.
I have some chest waders, courtesy of Mrs B (birthday pressie) but apart from 2 waist adjusters it didn't come with a belt.
I understand the safety first element of wearing a wading belt ie...
Had a couple of hours trotting on the Upper Bure at Horstead Mill. Despite wild swimmers and paddle boarders the fish were very obliging! Nice bag of roach, dace and perch. Even caught a beautifully marked brownie.
If its the weed I'm thinking of, it's not a good sign. Looks nice in the water but as you drag it out it becomes a thick matted slimy mess. Similar weed growth is found near sewage outfalls.
It is not oxygenating and its growth is promoted by phosphates in the river.
Another sign of a dying river 😟
Hi Neil. I've posted about this matter a few times on this forum. I won't go into all the why's and wherefores now as it makes me so angry 😤 and I have BP problems anyway!
Suffice to say most UK rivers are polluted, some worse than others. The only thing that will make those responsible do...
Hi Ashley. My barbel fishing is limited to a couple of weeks a year as my local river (Wensum) is now almost totally devoid of barbel due to a combo of pollution and predation.
There has been some excellent advice already given by members who probably know far more than me about catching barbel...
So glad this question has been asked! Richard, an extra query for you in particular: buying in bulk is obviously cheaper but does the unused line on the bulk spool last long enough to the next season and the one after that?
Not sure where I heard it/read it, but I thought mono line deteriorated...
I think we are all of "one voice" regarding this idiot. Can I offer a different "slant" on his actions though? The guy has shown himself up as having no regard for fish welfare and zero respect for this wonderful creature. To "Joe Public" however, this idiot could be seen as a "normal" angler...
Who is the guy? Obviously someone who knows NOTHING about fish care and respect. I agree with you Terry, the only way he could have "posed" with these barbel is by sacking them. Sad that he will considered an "angler" by the general public. Those poor fish ☹️
