    Thames side notice board

I've seen this picture before, not sure but I think the venue was Abingdon.

Yes, I love reading about those monsters too Alan.

    Anglers mail article

I'd like to fish in any way I like Howard (night fishing) but sadly some a lot of clubs (BAA. Leamington) petty rules don't allow it.

    Anglers mail article

A very valid point about the head of fish Richard, and I don't mean just barbel. A couple of years ago I was finding it hard going on the Thames (who doesn't?) but I did wonder if I was underfeeding because of the obviously small head of barbel. It occurred to me that if there were a lot of...

    Anglers mail article

Yes it does require patience David! I certainly never waited 8 hours! Usually, if I got to the water in the morning it would be maybe two and a half or three hours max before I started fishing. It also works well with pellets, boilies etc. if you have a decent head of fish.

    Anglers mail article

It's difficult to grasp the mentality behind someone who complains in writing about the methods used by other anglers, basing their complaints entirely on time and cost. Pete Reading and Stef Horak are two very successsful anglers, both in normal jobs, although I think Pete Reading has retired...

    Anglers mail article

It is nonetheless a very effective method, possibly the most effective of all. It can get to be a bit of a lottery these days though if you fish a river where visual sighting isn't possible, and an expensive lottery at that.

    Anglers mail article

I am not surprised, he seems to think people only night fish because they are not good enough to catch them in the daytime. There seems to be no consideration for personal circumstances, or the fact that many anglers simply prefer the experience of night fishing.

    Anglers mail article

I haven't read the article but I remember past articles by Pete Reading in CAT on the subject. He always came across as being quite anti night fishing from what I remember. But a good writer and very successful angler.

    Daylight hours fishing.

Daytime fishing really relies very much on location, especially nowadays with a vastly decimated barbel population in most rivers. I always found hemp and maggots/casters in good quantities could almost guarantee some fish if applied carefully. The trouble now is you have to be absolutely...

    Introducing loose feed?

One thing you need to remember when using a bait dropper in a faster flow. When the dropper hits the bottom raise the rod tip very slowly to release the bait. Any sharp movement will propel the bait high in the water and it will land a long way below where you want it to. I have observed this in...

A Question. Is there an answer? Floods.

Definitely a factor I would think Howard. One well known angler I was talking to said industry could well use massive floods to illegally dump stuff as the chances of it being accurately traced back were minimal.

A Question. Is there an answer? Floods.

The Warks Avon did decline after the 2007 floods but nowhere to the level it has declined in the last 3 or 4 years. It has always mystified me why really bad floods have more effect on the fish than a standard flood. After all, once the river spills into the fields that's it, the severity of the...

    Angling camaraderie

The first time I fished the Wasing syndicate on the Kennet I forgot my spreader block. Not the sort of thing you can borrow, and nobody else on the fishery anyway. I had to improvise with branches shaped with a penknife and string from the car. I was quite pleased with the result but never got...

    Flood Rod

I just bought one Tony, excellent rod. I bought it for carp on a small pool where they don't go very big, 20lb max, most about 8-14lb. But they fight like absolute demons and my 1.75 barbel rod was struggling so I bought the Advanta twin tip. Superb finish on these rods and quite exceptional for...

    Are Barbel the "new"carp ?

Interesting comparison with trout fishing there Terry. I grew up fishing the small mountain streams of west Wales and worm was the principle method of most anglers. But one or two who were highly skilled dry fly fishermen, my brother among them, would out catch the wormers like me every time.

    Are Barbel the "new"carp ?

This thread has tended, as must threads do, to go to the extremes of the topic, with Neil commenting on tons of bait 24/7 and lines criss-crossing the river everywhere, and others, myself included, going back to the cane rod/centre pin approach. As with most things the answer, if that's the...

    Are Barbel the "new"carp ?

Can't see a problem with bite alarms, it's just another way of bite indication. Most of the rivers I fish have no night fishing anyway, so not a lot of scope for long stay anglers. I also don't see why using pellets or feeders indicates a lack of skill. Years ago hemp was banned in many places...
