    Rod sleeves ?

Thanks for the advice David. I had been looking for a pair of sleeves for my 10 foot cane rods. I came across an offer for these Advanta ones ona French site and had dismissed it as being 'too cheap'. I was wrong. You are right.

    Centre pin advice please ?

As Mike has said, a good rachet is essential. You will also need it to be free running if you are casting more than 10 metres or so. There are plenty of second hand reels that will do the job from Trudex at the lighter end to Mordex and Speedia at the larger sizes. Also Grice & Young reels come...

    Your first barbel photo

Four of us went to Ireland. We fished a lough and never had a bite. Next day the others wanted to go pike fishing, but I had a feeling in my water about the lough. I dropped them off and went back. I had 15 bream, none under 5lb. Before I left to go and collect the others I took loads of snaps...

Two swims on the Charente today. This was the second swim I tried. Nothing doing. The first swim is an eddy where a tree creates a backwater. I tried upstream and downstream without a bite. Surface temp wss 10.7C so the party should be starting soon.

    Your first barbel photo

It was easier for the young 'uns Bill. They didn't have to carry a 5" x 4" glass plate field camera, wooden tripod and an ounce of magnesium powder for the flash gun.

    Your first barbel photo

I know it was late 1972 as I had just turned 16 and my Dad had bought me a 50cc moped that meant I could travel via the A1 dual carriageway to the River Wharfe 38 miles away. Albeit at 30mph. I had a rod, two rod rests, landing net, rucksack, flask, food, bait, waders, hat and waterproofs all...

    brolly recomendation for roving

Don't get the rip-stop one. It is not waterproof and is only suitable for when you are walking, not sitting. At best it could be described as shower proof like a packaway nylon jacket. It is OK as a tarp strung between poles or trees or as a camo' screen.

    brolly recomendation for roving

I agree about the brolly .v. roving dilemma. If I am determined to travel the lehgth of the river bank I leave the brolly in the car and rely on a poncho. The American Army ones are made from a rubberised material and are100% waterproof. When sat on a fishing chair it covers me, the chair, my...

    Wind

At this time of year on stillwaters it is all about wind temperature compared against the water temperature. We are due three days of south-westerlies and that will drive the carp to the lee shores or shallows in the north-east parts. It will also warm up surface water on the rivers and fishing...

    Wind

Regards trotting on the Trent and other rivers; if you have an upstream wind it can hamper the presentation, slowing the float down. That could be the reason catch rates drop.

    Cleaning cork handles

Back on subject after the porn hijack; the soap used by mechanics Swarfeega and the dry stuff sold in Lidl and the like get my grubby, groundbait encrusted rod handles clean again. And no need for abrasivss. Just a wet cloth.

    What month

I read a French biologist saying that the larger, or older barbel didn't spawn. Given that the Dearne barbel were seen to be spawning around the time of the opening of the season I think for northern waters the close season isn't protecting them. From my observations in south-west France...

    Shimano purist barbel is back.

I had the same experience with a Greys 15 foot float rod on the Don in Sheffield. The 12 foot version was better for grayling.

    Shimano purist barbel is back.

Tim, you are spot on with the marketing aspect. It seems that everything is being re-launched from MG cars to ATCO lawnmowers and none have any relationship to the products they are trying to suggest that they are. At least the Purist name is still owned by the same company and has not just...
