    The best catapult design yet

I've got a Drennan one I bought in the mid 90s that's basically the same (although the gap between the arms isn't as big). I don't think it was sold as adaptable or anything, more just easy to remove and replace the rubber, but you remove and fit it in exactly the same fashion as the one in...

    Angling Times otter article

That's one of Pete Reading's opinions in the article, but quite how you would begin to study or test that theory beyond anecdotal opinion...

Ignoring my silly bit of levity on page 3, I'm learning a LOT in this thread - keep it up chaps.👍👌

    Angling Times otter article

I know a good chunk of bigfoot sightings in the US and Canada are actually river otters. So, y'know, the reverse could be true and maybe we've got bigfoots living by England's lowland rivers. Barbel taking b'stards. "BLOODY BIGFOOT!" you often hear on the riverbank. And you just roll your...

Well yeah, but there's no way I can afford one😆

    Peregrine Rods

Unfortunately a bit above my affordability range, but I've only ever heard VERY good things about them. I learnt only recently that I can literally walk to where they're made in Midsomer Norton. Small world.

Alex - my opinions on the matter are roughly the same as yours, however my longer term outlook is probably a bit more optimistic, but then my experience is a LOT more limited than most on here. I left the fishing scene in the mid 90s (work, social life and relationships "got in the way") just...

Wasn't/isn't Adams Mill some isolated ecological and biological oddity though? As in one of those short stretches of small river where everything seems to get mysteriously massive? ... I don't know what my point is there. Maybe that it's not a good comparable? Dunno.

Pete Reading's comments about no impact were specifically about the Avon and Stour. He mentioned the Great Ouse matter as a separate issue. That was probs just how I laid it out, so a bad editorial thing on my part.

Andrew - nothing on the website. Rather than reproduce in full here by way of a photo of the article (I don't want to get Andy F in copyright trouble or anything), I will summarise: Steve Pope thinks predator-prey balance is at a tipping point in most barbel rivers based on anecdotal evidence...

    Angling Times otter article

Interesting article in this week's AT which offers views from Pete Reading, Mark Everard, Steve Pope and a non-angling scientist. It won't settle the argument either way and is sure to ruffle a few feathers (so be warned), but I thought I'd mention it as there's a little bit of actual...

    JW Young River Specialist centrepin

Yeah, it would be. Anything with Gary's name attached is about as trustworthy as you can get when it comes to pins, so I'm beginning to wonder if I'm getting the QC confused with another manufacturer.

RE the Avon Royal Supreme - it's not really up to the task of trotting (at least mine isn't!😄), and it certainly wouldn't win any aesthetic awards, but for ledgering/swimfeeder fishing in running water it doesn't have any other rival in the pin world that I've come across (hence me asking about...

I hadn't seen the website before today since they had a sale at some point in 2019 (clearance sale perhaps?), from which I scored a couple of rods for a fairly decent price (rods which I haven't actually used yet thanks to covid and other nonsense). I have a few Youngs reels but, like you...

I stand corrected - I might be thinking about their rods (which they don't seem to have on their website any more). But QC on the reels is definitely more iffy than it used to be, as confirmed by several peeps on here.

Ben - alas all-too common for (new) Youngs reels, for the last few years actually. I think I'm right in saying they're only designed in the UK now, but manufactured and put together thousands of miles away on a massive production line with several other brands I believe.

    JW Young River Specialist centrepin

Thanks Richard. I'm not in the market for a Trent, just curious about the Youngs River Specialist and how it handles. My Avon Royal Supreme is my go-to pin for ledgering so I'm wondering how a new pin with a similar function compares, especially with Youngs rather variable QC these days.
