    What are the chances?

Two of my mates caught the same barbel within 30mins! I have caught the same chub an hour apart one evening and then again the next day. My feeling is we credit fish with more intelligence than needed. We also over estimate stock levels due to not taking repeat captures into account.

    Club Memberships...how many?

Coarse fishing, four plus two syndicate waters and a syndicate trout water. Oops! tell a lie, five + syndicates. More water than I will fish in a lifetime let alone a season. Spoilt for choice.

    Anglers mail article

Bait and wait is ok if; 1. you have the time and 2. you have the money. Personally I rarely have the time but it does reward the guys who have both of those items.

I know who runs it. I can contact him and pass on your interest but I believe the syndicate is fully subscribed.

    Hook choice

I ordered the Bank Tackle hooks late Thursday evening and they arrived in the post Saturday morning. Obviously yet to test them but they look very good quality and are very sharp. Also I use them for other odds and ends of terminal tackle and like it that you can order in the quantity that...

    Hook choice

I have used the Gardner Target Specimen barbless for a few years now and this season tried the ESP Cryogen barbless as the Gardners are limited to a maximum of size 10. Both have never let me down. I do however accept the risk that the occasional fish simply comes off as the lack of barb...

Reel to match Drennan Duo 1.5

If you are going to be feeder fishing for chub and want to clip up for accuracy like match anglers do then a MAP ACS (Automatic Clip System) reel might be useful. If you hook a barbel the line comes out of the clip allowing it to take line and saving you getting smashed up. Here is a link to...

    Darent valley 13ft specialist float

I have one of those rods and so far have only used it to trot for smaller fish. I don't think it has the power to deal with barbel though. I like the fact it is a two piece rod so I can easily carry it made up and amuse myself catching silvers before I settle down to an evening after the...

    Time for a new rod

Why three piece? Is is to store unseen in the boot of a car?

The world really has gone mad

I binned my small number of vinyl LPs when doing a house move. CDs had taken over and you could not buy a record deck at that time so I considered them to have no value. Perhaps the bloke at the local dump was more astute and saved them for himself.

    PVA Products

I use them via Ebay and paid on paypal. Never had any problems with the at all and I have made a number of purchases. They have over 50,000 ebay sales and 100% positive feedback.

Hooks for meat. Big or small? Pattern?

I started using Gardner Target Specimen barbless hooks a few years ago and they are incredibly strong and reliable. Biggest size is 10 and that's what I use for hair rigged meat with barbel being landed in excess of 16lbs.

    Polarized glasses

What people call glasses are not in fact glass but hi tech plastic or as some advertise "organic glass" although some specialist manufacturers may use glass. As I have cataracts developing I would not go for prescription polaroids due to my lens prescription changing over a period of months...

Wanted- pair of Avon/ specialist rods

Not a lot wrong with the old John Wilson rods which have an avon tip and quiver section with three different weight tips. There were a few versions over the years the one with a model code AQ1102 being the nicest in my opinion. Always some on ebay. Another option is the Drennan Specialist...

If these restrictions are continued I'm going to be skint. What have you bought lately?

I am on 14 days self isolation from my health care job, as my wife, a nurse in a care home, has had contact with a symptomatic resident and now has some mild symptoms herself. So I have time on my hands. First trip into the garage revealed I had 9 rods made up ready to use! A combination of...

    I need a quality Umbrella

I tend to err towards being a fine weather fisherman and also like to rove so not often I carry an umbrella. Also I find that when rain is forecast and I hump the umbrella up and down the bank it stays dry and on days when there is a "chance of a shower" it pees down. I did however buy the Fox...
