Is Barbel fishing on the decline?

Yes, a thoughtful post Howard. I think that many have had to adjust their priorities in the last couple of years. Maybe they're having to work longer hours, doing different shifts, or they're looking for work. Anyway, angling isn't cheap for many and times are tough. I think there might be a...

Is Barbel fishing on the decline?

I think all forms of coarse fishing are on the decline, anecdotally. I think people have been struggling financially and have been battening down the hatches. Additionally, I think many people would rather play on the x-box.

The bigger picture & the biggest problem

Anglers are seen as self-interested, working class, smelly and, above all, cruel individuals. They leave their families for hours and days at a time to pursue a pastime that, frankly, the population at large don't get at all. They poison swans, hate otters, rant about eastern Europeans and shout...

Are you ONLY a barbel fisherman, or do you turn your hand to other species too?

Pike fishing in my mid-wales secret hideaway; light tackle wrasse fishing in Anglesey and North Cornwall; bass fishing from the rocks (fly rod) and in the surf from Anglesey, other north Wales marks and North Cornwall. Finally, wreck and reef fishing in North Wales and Cornwall, whenever I get...

    Strange catch....

I fought what I thought was a blue shark once for about 20 minutes, whilst fishing for wrasse on the rocks near Aberdaeron on the Lleyn. It ran me a merry dance before snapping me off right at my feet. It was a large common seal, but hadn't been hooked - it still had half a pollack in it's...

Shark, its a shark, its a big ass shark.....

I'm amazed that anyone goes in the water over there to be honest. The news today about the surfer bitten in half and then consumed was awful to say the least. :( BBC News - Surfer dies in latest shark attack in Western Australia Good on the guy on the jetski for trying to recover the...

    otters

Hi Chris. This topic excites passions does it not?:) Ok, otters will extend their territory to up to 20km to secure a food supply (apparently - had to look it up :)) and the young will move on out of their parent's territory, which itself is dependent on the food supply. Anyway, I don't like...

    otters

Lets also remember that barbel are not indigenous to many rivers in the uk and were introduced by man into ecosystems that already had otter populations. If that's not interfering with an ecosystem then I don't know what is. I think we have to accept that otters are in our rivers where they...
