    A great angler

I don't understand the idea of competition interfering with my concept of angling. I've met great characters of angling and prefer to think of it in that way. I've also noticed dedication and modesty and a kind of passion to share. Generally human qualities. I'm not in it for the money or fame...

Nah, leave it closed and enjoy. That makes sense.

    Pre-baiting

I agree with the comments above but add the general comment that it's a no-no to put in large amounts of bait into small rivers. Doesn't do anyone any favours at all. Like I say Ian Grant's article is the way to go. Cheers Nick

Retrofit a drag facility to your centrepin

My Speedia reel has 3 settings for the rachet, which solves the problem. He said smugly. Nick

    Pre-baiting

Ian Grant's written a really good article (in BFW articles) on targeting bigger barbel. Seems like he's got the good way to go with any pre-baiting as such. It's an 88 mile round trip to the river for me, that, the expense and the general idea/tactic of it mean I've never really tried it...

EXCITING NEWS ! THE BARBEL SHOW 2014: SUNDAY 4th MAY

I let my membership lapse in 2012 more as a result of the recession than thinking they do anything other than a lot of seriously good work - particuarly with improving environments and research, so good luck to them and the event. By the way Howard the diversion of my earlier post - Peter Cook /...

    Spawning Barbel

I don't think Dave G's view is laughable at all, I think it expresses a view that many will have empathy with. I think he's talking about the on-demand immediacy of society now. Bartender a pint of guinness please! Nick

Sounds fantastic and that's a great photo. Was dreaming last night of digging up the garden and doing something similar - pipe dreams! Good on you Dave. Cheers Nick

    Close season.

I'm not sure I want my fishing to 'get with the now'. And if I did I could do things like go to a commercial any time of the year. No offence to anyone that does either, I really don't mean any offence to anyone that does, but it's a different thing on a river. Nick

    Close season.

I often do, do a bit of cormorant annoying, take a walk just to get a fix of being by the river. It's also useful to look at the place without a rod. I thoroughly recommend it. For me it's not all about catching fish, (would be bug*ered if it was), nor being able to do it all year long. I'm...

BFW poll on close season lift or extension.

Looking at it another way at the moment 68% want to have a close season in some shape or form and 32% want it removed altogether. Of those that want a close season 38% of them would rather the dates were changed. Over the weekend I fixed a dodgy bannister, cleared a load of stuff from the garden...

Thanks Mark -was distracted by Chelsea's 4th goal going in and now its 6. Oh dear.

BFW poll on close season lift or extension.

Paul/ Mods. I just mis-voted, wanted to vote in favour of keeping it as it is, but pressed the wrong button at about 1.40pm today. Could my vote be changed to reflect this? apologies. I'm voting to keep it as it is. Its good to have a break, in analogy you wouldn't want the football season to...

    Chair or not?

Chub Superlite chair is very light at about 4LB and folds flat. It's low though which suits me fine but might be a problem for some. Think it's about £20 which isn't bad.

    Chair or not?

Tend to sit on a plastic bait bucket if travelling light. Also found that a landing mat beats a knitted blanket on your lap when blanking in the cold. Blow me if that's the only use it's had recently.
