    Shimano baitrunner oil

3 in 1 has too high a viscosity for me. I use a light cycle oil on my reels.

    Sweetcorn for barbel?

Hi Terry, my fourth alternative bait was really just a throwaway line, but... I normally fish two rods and take two baits, luncheon meat and halibut pellet have been most successful for me. If I blank, which is more often than not, I will fish one of those baits with an alternative, normally a...

    Sweetcorn for barbel?

Hi Ian, thanks for that. I hope you are well and have had a good season so far. I am thinking of having sweetcorn as a forth alternative bait. From the comments of others I may be better waiting until the start of next season. :)

    Sweetcorn for barbel?

I was told that 15 -20 years ago, before I started barbel fishing, sweetcorn was a bait used by many barbel anglers with great success. I have tried it for barbel a couple of times but, where I fish, blanks are a lot more common than barbel so I wasn't surprised when I didn't catch anything :)...

    What's your honest assessment?

Whilst I accept there are lots of factors, such as otters, cormorants, signal crayfish etc. that affect our fish I believe there is a hidden factor that is at play. My money would be on oestrogen, hormones, antibiotics and other chemicals that are pumped into our rivers from sewerage works or...

    Xmas Quiz

You can change the quiver tips without breaking down the rod. Many years ago I remember seeing the tops of some tips with a top ring you could open, like the clasps one gets on ladies necklaces. I am not sure why one or the other didn't catch on but if I have the wrong tip on I normally just...

    Bob mortimer fishing programme

Like a lot of other programs with an Angling bias the programme is aimed at the mass market, not anglers. I watched parts of it and it is just a couple of older guys messing around by a lake, living in a Yurt and visiting a brewery. For me it was a couple of second rate comedians in a second, or...

    Molasses

£8.99 for 5 litres at Countrywide Farmers, but they are in liqidation so it may not be available soon!

    Molasses

I used a bottle of Molasses for a while, adding it to groundbait and dipping boilies in it. I don't think my catch rate went up and it made a mess of my hands, tackle bag etc. so I gave up using it.

    Rod builder near reading

You could try the Tackle Box in Wokingham Road, Reading. Tel: 0118 926 9183. He has put replacement rings onto my rod for me but I don't know if he will do full rebuilds.

    Which brand of terminal tackle?

If it is something I have used before and liked I will buy from the same manufacturer. If the local shop doesn't stock it, and I can wait a couple of days, I will order it on-line. I sympathise with the local shop owners but I am not going to buy one brand when I prefer another.

    Vote for your favourite fish

Sticklebacks David, the survey is aimed at the general public and was promoted by Countryfile on the BBC. As they recently had an article about sticklebacks it is hardly surprising they were included. They probably had an article about Basking Sharks as well! The survey is more likely to...

    Tring?

Tony the first place I think of when anyone mentions Tring is the reservoirs. When I was a lot younger I fished them as I use to live near Dunstable, so it was a short trip. They weren't easy fishing but they held some large tench, bream and roach.

    Dilley resigns

If he had gone to Cumbria and had people show him around (people who had more important things to do) and he had nodded sagely and said "that's a lot of water, it must have rained" would it have done much good? On a positive note, I see the government are going to pay farmers to have their land...

    Costing the earth

Phosphate pollution in rivers You might like to read this. It seems that the main problem is phosphates in "treated" sewerage rather than in farm run off but there is also an issue with the lack of water flow in some rivers (caused by water abstraction ?) and other undefined ecosystem problems...
