    Flurocarbon Hooklengths

Hello all I use Airflo sightfree G3, 3rd generation fluorocarbon. Been using it in varying breaking strains for a couple of years and can`t recommend it highly enough. It is generally used by the fly fishing fraternity as a tippet material. Mic

    Record Equaling Chub

Mittens Mittens definitely thrive in completely fresh water and I`ve had several chub, caught from as far up as Penton Hook, excreting pieces of carapace. Not a hundred per cent certain that it is mitten carapace but I`ve had mitten trouble on these stretches of the Thames. When they are...

    Record Equaling Chub

The big chub/barbel/crayfish analogy (can you have an analogy of three?) seems generally to hold true with large fish/small populations due to high protein food source availability for the chub/barbel and poor fry recruitment through the crays feeding on the spawn of the aforementioned. Do we...

    Things I miss. Thamesley feeders

Hedgehogs! anybody else noticed that dead hedgehogs on the roadside have been replaced by dead badgers? House sparrows. ABU Cardinal reels, I am managing to keep mine going but they are getting a little dog eared now. Catching fish on the Thames! Mic

    The 'toach'

Simon, Sarah Brightman! what was she doing with that "toad" ALW anyway when she could have me, she could have played with my salamander. I call it salamander because its "my newt" She definitely could have been my pal mate. Thats enough of that!! Mic

    Bait disasters and near divorce!

About 25 years ago, when I lived in a flat, I had left all my bait next to the communal front door ready for an early start, amongst the bait was 3 pints of pinkies. Suffice to say the pinkies were no longer captive when I got to them in the morning. I had a few early mornings making my way to...

    Chub Fishing

Simon Yes the spade end ones, down to my last couple of dozen now. didn`t use them in 2/0s normally anything from 1 to 4s. The avatar fish fell to flake on a slightly less crude set up...only slightly mind. Mic

    Chub Fishing

Lushy We are talking some time ago and you have to try these things to find out if they are c**p or not and you`re right they are c**p. In fact I switched to large maruta kinryus when I needed a large strong paste hook and still like them now. Mic

    Chub Fishing

Lushy You have to make allowances for some of the whipper snappers on here, they don`t remember the pre hair days. No problem with side hooking, chub don`t seem to mind big hooks, I`ve even used size 2/0 Cox and Rawle crab hooks in the past with no ill effects on my catch ratio. mic

    Chub Fishing

First cast in any swim will often elicit a bite from the largest chub living there in my experience. So make sure all your fiddling with bait, bits and flasks has stopped and concentrate on the rod. Miss that one and you may miss the best opportunity of the fish you seek. Mic

    monster barbel mystery river

Mark Spot on about Farnham`s bit of the Loddon, a very few lucky souls (myself included) had quite a few wonderfully quiet seasons on there until Mr Charman blew the bugle. Amazing how many people claim to have fished it prior to Charman`s announcement, funny I could count on the fingers of one...

when to stop fishing for barbel

I think everybody should really stop fishing for barbel about now! No point really, no real chance of catching in these temperatures, waste of time, probably best to leave the rivers alone completely in fact. Lots of nice lakes and stillwaters to have a go at, rivers are nasty in the...

    Superstitions

Tom You must remember the Clangers, stop frame, puppet animation series by Oliver Postgate featuring a colony of pink, long snouted creatures that lived on the moon, who communicated by a series of mournful whistles. Also featured The Soup Dragon who my angling colleague of that time often...

    Superstitions

When I used to fish the Kennet around Burghfield there was a set of traffic lights on the railway bridge near Kirtons Farm waterskiing centre. I used to try and hit the lights on green and was convinced that if I did a good days sport would be in the offing. It got ridiculous, to the extent of...
