    Hair length??

Started getting some hook pulls. Asked a well known angling journalist for advice and he told me to use a longer hair. I don't like long hairs for no better reason than I don't think they look right. However took the advice and the hook pulls stopped.

    Rods for droppering

Pretty much with you on this one Chris. Don't drive or earn a big wage, which can be a disadvantage for an angler. However it does help focus the mind on what I really need to take with me catch fish, and I don't spend a lot of time agonising as to whether I have all the tools and the the best...

    Rods for droppering

Dragon carp telescopic carp rod, £10. Take it on holiday, catch mackerel, use as heavy float rod, light beach rod, and chucking 50 gram plus wedges ( feathers above wedge if you want). Looks naff, but £10 of great fun. If how it looks worries you just make sure no one is looking when you are...

    Garlic flavour.

If you intend to use real garlic you should use your own. Garlic grown in northern Europe has a much stronger flavour than the stuff you buy in the shops. Plant cloves before Christmas and dig up when the leaves yellow and fall over. Traditionally garlic in this country is planted on the...

What are you going to do differently for the coming season?

Planning to fish a bigger, deeper part of the Sussex Ouse. Wonder if the slipping clutches on my reels still work after four years of being wound done tight. Hit and hold is exiting, but variety is the spice of life. Planning to give fishy/meaty flavoured black eyed beans another go. Anyone...

    More Tench advice please.

Hi John Just read what you wrote about black eyed beans. Just so happens I have a bag of Hallibut Flavoured black eyed beans in the freezer. Tried to catch Barbel on them. Failed, but didn't really give them a fair go, and the Sussex Ouse can be a bit hard and moody for Barbel at...

    Tench/light barbel rod

Shakespeare power avon twin tip has a screw in top ring on the avon top. Not everyone's cup o' tea, but I like mine.

    More Tench advice please.

Thanks for all the advice chaps. I am getting quite a sense of anticipation. As for rigs and methods I have decided to set up 2 rods. One will be dead old fashioned and I will fish the way I fished years ago, ie bait in the hook etc. For the other I have tied up some rigs. I have gone for a...

    More Tench advice please.

Many thanks for that chaps. Looking forward to using up old Barbel baits. The one I forgot to ask about were Hallihookers. Bought some and quickly gave up trying to catch a Barbel on these, much better and cheaper stuff available. However they look as if they might be a good Tench hook bait...

    More Tench advice please.

Since returning to fishing a few years ago I have fished almost exclusively for Barbel. I have now decided retrace my steps and get back into a spot of Tench fishing. My first question is about bait. I would like to use up the baits I already have as I live and fish on a fairly tight...
