    Best fishing book

A Dream of Jewelled Fishes by John Aston ( I will read a chapter of this every week, love it ). Elite Barbel by Tony Miles ( how I imagined I fished for Barbel ,only done properly 😂). Quest for Barbel by Tony Miles and Trevor West ( probably should be in every Barbel fishers library) Casting at...

    First ever barbel

Great result Mark, I still remember my 'first' some 40 odd years ago with great affection. G.T.

    Digital Scales

Hi Paul, I actually took my old scratched plastic dial cover off my Avons and put a new clear plastic cover on, good as new now! G.T.

    Digital Scales

Nothing wrong with being 'old' Ady, I'm 69 and 'sharp as a tack'. Now where did I put my underpants? (Voice from the kitchen) 'You've put them on your head again dear' Oops...😱 G.T.

    New chub record?

I suppose only the angler in question knows the truth of this capture. I believe if I had caught a river record I would want at least one witness just for my own piece of mind as in all the excitement it is easy to get confused and misread the scales. I hate to disbelieve any angler who has had...

    Daylight hours fishing.

Hi Mike, I may be saying the obvious but it has to be small baits and lighter tackle when the swim is appropriate for that approach. Personally I used to wait for the river ( lower Severn usually ) to have a 'drop on' and then I could use the heavier tackle and big smelly baits. Regards, G.T.

    Angling camaraderie

Yes, we are all different aren't we. Anybody who says 'I would never forget anything' must be under 40 years of age.😂 I certainly remember arriving at Earlswood lakes without any reels😱. And no , I didn't wander the banks if asking if anybody had a couple of spare reels they weren't using at...

    Moon phase charts

Hi, I have mentioned this before but it may be relevant here. When I was fishing the 'lower' Severn regularly there were occasions when the river appeared to be 'backing up' i.e. flowing in the wrong direction. There would even be small waves breaking on the surface going in the wrong direction...

    Lightweight fishing trousers

Ex-military are generally indestructible and plenty of choice. G.T.

River Severn at Hallow (sections 4-5)

P.S. There are pools belonging to the BAA close by if the river is out of sorts.... G.T.

River Severn at Hallow (sections 4-5)

Hi , If you drive to the next stretch at Grimley ( next to the Camp Hotel) there is parking next to the river and the swims to the first hundred yards have been made with access for disabled anglers. There are half a dozen steps to properly constructed fishing platforms. Hopefully they have not...

    Luncheon meat

And if you want something more technical you can slip a blade of grass under the bend of the hook before you pass it back through the meat. 😉🦈 G.T.

A nice gesture Mr Elliott.... Regards, G.T.

What would you do in this scenario.

I have always fished two lines on the 'lower severn', plenty of room for this approach and also helps if you feel like experimenting with baits. I have always enjoyed any 'bonus fish' ( not Barbel), as they have often saved a miserable blank! Tight Lines, G.T.

Free fishing, how to find it..

Some of the best fishing I ever had was 'free'. Simply a case of asking and then behaving in a responsible manner when permission was granted, Regards, G.T.

    Angling Trust

We are told by the 'experts' that living with Covid is the ' new normal'. We are all going to have to adapt the way we work and socialise. Going fishing is going to be part ot that debate. Nice to see so much support for our NHS and the carers etc. Unfortunately one of my neighbours died this...

    Archived River Reports.

Would it be true to say that only the Trent and the Wye are currently fishing better for Barbel than they did 10 years ago? Regards, G.T.
