    Catching at any cost

I agree with you, very marmite and honestly not a fan of the platforms but I get why they did it in terms of accessibility. It can be like shooting fish in a barrel but I find it useful if I’m testing out a new float, bait, rig as it takes the “are there fish in my swim” variable out of the...

    Cheaper pins

Out of the pins you listed, I’d go with either Trudex or Rapidex. They can be great little reels and perfect for trotting. Personally I don’t like the Speedia or Supreme for trotting, they just feel clunky. Trudex has the advantage of being able to Wallis cast which you can’t with the Rapidex...

    Freelining tips

When touch legering you want to get in a position that’s stable & comfortable so you can be as still as possible and concentrate all your senses on feeling the bites. No good if you’re moving about or there’s a bramble poking you in the back. When holding the line, find the hand position that’s...

    Bearing pins. Replacing the bearings.

One thing I should have mentioned is that different AS reels have different bearings. The 5” different to the 4.5” (and probably 4”). I’m not sure about the drag version, so make sure you measure the bore, outer diameter & width as accurately as possible before ordering anything. The second...

    Bearing pins. Replacing the bearings.

Hi Ralph, Yep the bearings are doing great. They are still silky smooth. I got the bearings from this supplier on Aliexpress, they’ve got a billion and one bearings on there. I think these are the ones. Yes, the rear bearing sticks out a little from the central hub. Here’s a shot of the...

    Drennan Specialist landing Net 32"

What’s the depth of the net like? Looks fairly shallow but maybe that’s the angle of the pic.

    Elliptical shaped pellets

Likewise, I tried some of their small black pellets as alternative hookbait when float fishing hemp (couldn’t find any decent large hemp). The fish completely switched off. Maybe a one-off but wasn’t impressed.

    Elliptical shaped pellets

It’s a Fjuka pellet, so think liquorice allsort more than halibut pellet.

    Mainline for trotting

Sensor if snaggy, DH Pro Match otherwise. (I tried Korum Glide and hated it. Sorry!)

They’re Czech I think so do they use 3/8" BSF or M8 thread?

    Tench 2024

I had 4 on the pin on Wednesday, such excellent fighters. Plus had the oddest tench I’ve ever seen ;)

    Tench 2024

I had another couple on Friday. Drennan Tench float rod (love this rod) and an Adcock Stanton I’d restored. Lost a bigger one in the lilies unfortunately. Had to resort to float leger as the bites were so finicky.

    Rod line rating question

Similar to @Ian Woods I usually stick with 6lb sensor on mine, although you could argue that’s more or less 8lb line. I landed a 30lb carp on it last month, took an age to get in but the rod (& line) worked perfectly.

    Tench 2024

A lovely day for tenching today, dare I say too hot after such 💩 weather? Five hooked, four landed. No monsters, biggest a smidge under 5 but a lot of fun on pin & float.

    Crimping nylon booms

Yep I’ve used them in the past on carp rigs, although not something I use anymore. I used 0.6 mm Korda Krimps on a 25lb fluorocarbon boom. Crimping tool was one I’ve got for wire traces works no problem.

Anybody seen one of these ?

I had one of these reels from Aliexpress and they are good enough for the money. A decent starter pin to begin the obesssion lol. I think I paid £45 so your price was fair. A slight niggle I had with mine is that as they are made to lower tolerances, the gap between spool and body is slighter...

    Youngs river specialist

No problem, glad to help. I’ve just checked the Enterprise tackle isotope I’ve got, which is 15 mm x 3 mm but it won’t fit in the slot. The rounded corners don’t help & it’s just too tight.
