Poor bugger...bad timing but at least you saved the rod albeit injuring yourself in the process. However flesh repairs itself but not smashed carbon so chin up.
Depending on what you have done ie tear sprain or snapped hamstring you should be 'back on the grass' in about six weeks. 😏
So if we have a mat we are first and foremost caring after our fish? I prefer to unhook etc with the fish in the net, barbel not as tough as carp, and have seen too many belly up barbel sadly.
100% Derek. Was watching the Chris Ponsford's excellent big Chub you tube offering again today, fishing the WA near me, he simply wrapped some Cheddar I think it was from the Co op, around a boilie to snag some huge Chub.

But a lovely part of the world, remember stopping off on the...
2012 The summer that never was, the severn was brim full with water and barbel.
Opening day the only river that was fishable local was the Arrow, caught a barb first cast, crazy times.
Great Neil... it could be a long wait happily toast your success if you do manage a Dee Barbel with a bottle of Moet I have set aside for Bristol City's promotion to the Premiership.
I wonder what will come first?
Agreed Jim, by nature those types want all the groundwork already done. For me anyway I love that sometimes a Barbel can be caught in the most unlikely of places be it a urban centre or the wilds of West Wales.
I was born in Bristol by the Bristol Avon near the center of Bristol, it was then...
I get the fish chasing side if what we do, I am a very average Barbel angler but lucked out on a few fish on a particular stretch and understand how some people enjoy ruining it not only for the angler but for the fish too.
I have no time for that personally and seeing a fish I caught...
