In reality can Barbel really know the difference ?

Believe me Dave at this rate it would take many years to 'glean' it all,and of course the'True History of HNV baits' will continue to grow for as long as I live. Mike in all honesty I would doubt very much if many anglers are using baits that I would consider to be HNV baits,I know nothing...

In reality can Barbel really know the difference ?

Mike the actual comment I made in 1968 was that if HNV bait was widely use it would be the end of Carp fishing as we know it,and was published in an article by Jim Gibbinson. If anyone remembers what Carp fishing was like in 1968 I think they would agree this has happened . I first saw a...

In reality can Barbel really know the difference ?

Hell Graham, Having just read your post on blood-worms I was surprised that they contain only 6-8% protein and looked it up and you are right. However if the water is removed the protein content is actually over 50% of dried material and also contains a fair number of vitamins...

In reality can Barbel really know the difference ?

There is no way I am suggesting that Carp or any other fish would find Bitrex attractive merely that the bitterness did not deter them from taking a bait they had eaten before.

In reality can Barbel really know the difference ?

I don't want to get deeply involved in this discussion but several mentions have been made about fish having a liking for certain tastes which I very much doubt.Carp are said to favour sweet tasting baits yet many years ago while trying to discourage birds from eating my bait without harming...

    Specimen and Specialist Groups

Thanks for the kind words Mike but I honestly can't see a situation arising when I would publish.I have never felt the urge to suggest to others that my ideas are nearer to being correct than their's my interest has always been to follow up an idea I had forty odd years ago always trying to look...

    Specimen and Specialist Groups

I have actually spent a fair amount of time during the last few years writing a true account of how the HNV bait started and progressed not for publication but just so a true account exists rather than the mistaken (and sometimes deliberately twisted) versions I have read.

    HNV baits for Barbel.

Are HNV baits better than Spam for barbel? Definitely both for catching them and for the fish's health.

    Barbel Diet Analysis

Graham, The natural diet of barbel and carp is high in protein as the bulk of it is live insects etc and all living cells with the exception of fat are protein based,as far as I am aware with my admittedly limited knowledge live food does not contain a large percentage of...

    Barbel Diet Analysis

Fat cannot be turned into muscle.Fat in food can only be used for energy, carbohydrate can be used for immediate energy use or stored as fat for later energy use.Only protein can become muscle and can also be use as energy.

    Barbel Diet Analysis

Pete, Fish do grow big in tanks if fed a nutritious diet ask Brian Hankin about the Goldfish he saw in a tank in my kitchen in Kent many years ago when he and a mate whose name was something like Bontoff (my apologies for the spelling) came down to fish Johson's Lakes......Fred.

    Spawning time.

Unfortunately a woman reported on the local radio last week that she had stood on Powick Bridge and watched the seal (which has been given a name) swimming in the Teme.

Fishing for barbel close to a holt

The fact that Barbel were caught in the swim shows that they were not spooked by the otter frequently being in the area and although the Wye is a wider river than the river in the original query if the area looks likely to hold Barbel I would give it a go despite the otters. Julian...

Fishing for barbel close to a holt

On one of my favourite barbel swims on the Wye there is a resident Otter which can be heard most evenings, and seen on occasions during daylight, yet it still produces good catches of barbel.
