You're right about the new spirit rods they no longer come with sleeves so I'll just have to keep my eyes open for them.

A bit of a long shot. Does anyone have any Free Spirit green nylon rod sleeves they want to part with I've attached a photo of the one I have alongside one of my original sleeves that must be 25 years old and is gradually falling to bits...my sewing skills aren't up to much. Here's hoping!
