If you don't need to use barbless then get on Drennan Super Specialist hooks in 14's and 12's. Tench ' thump ' so hard they will easily throw a barbless hook on a short hooklength as the feeder / lead helps to bounce the hook out. No need to hair rig either when you are using small hooks and...

Going back to Steve's point. Clearly if I was targeting one or two very large fish on a more intimate venue then I can see the merit in ' going large ' to save unwanted takes from smaller barbel. Clearly a 6 pounder isn't gonna get in its mouth what a 16 pounder...
