Just back from four days fishing for cats on the Ebro with Al Henderson guiding again from his boat. http://ebro-catfishing.com/
Had a great time once again with kittens of 20lb, 25lb, 35lb and some proper ones of 88lb, 105lb and 172lb. The latter stripped 150m of line off me before we got the...
I swapped over the trebles on my favourite pike lures to the Pallatrax trebles. Haven't lost a fish yet and a lot easier to remove from both fish and net.
Well in Richard, chuffed to bits for you.
I was going to offer to guide you for free of course for your first barbel as I've done for many others. No need now!
I wouldn't say that there is a typical Trent set up, depends on where you're fishing, how far you're casting and the conditions.
I've got 1.75lb to 2.75lb rods and everything in between. Reels, close in work centrepins or Shimano 5000 reels or up to 8000 size for a chuck to the far bank.
Hi Richard,
Early season and with the rivers low and relatively clear I'd stick to the Ouse. Leeds bit Nun Monkton about 50 pegs to go at, plenty have barbel; York bit at Beningborough or Widdington, always a decent chance but with the latter remember to observe the 'game only' limit until 1st...
I've got three new rivers in mind for a barbel, I've done my research, they are occasionally caught so I know that they exist. I'm prepared for the blanks and the legwork, not all about numbers. One thing's for sure I won't see another angler!
A double from a river that I fish infrequently...
Funnily enough Tuffnells recently delivered a 61kg 'fragile' parcel to us, bloke on his own who rolled it from the street to the front door according to our neighbour. The contents were badly damaged so were sent back.
The AT response perfectly sums up my feelings.
Jamie Cook certainly raising the profile of the Angling Trust. Good to hear some honest talk without the waffle and soundbites.
As a professional mariner I'd say that anything that doesn't require a trailer probably isn't big enough to be in saltwater unless you go down the sea kayak route. A lot of my colleagues are RNLI and spend a disproportionate amount of time collecting people in small boats from inshore waterways...
Gary, I would urge you not to post it anywhere or share it with friends. We as anglers know that it was entirely accidental but don't underestimate those groups who would wish to do our hobby harm. I'm pretty sure that it could easily be portrayed differently even as a deliberate act.
I've been out fishing once during lockdown #3, a small farm pond in our village, I walked. It's my local venue just past my local shop and pub, seemed to be keeping in line with the spirit of things.
Circle hooks - I use a 10/0 circle hook with a whole mackerel for my tuna fishing, 99% of the time the fish is hooked in the scissors making for easy removal.
This article may help those still confused. Seems pretty straightforward to me, stay as local as possible. If you push the boundaries, get caught and you're all over the national press you'll be doing your fellow anglers a great disservice...
Jeremy Wade in one of his books describes the FG knot he uses to join braid to nylon/fluoro, it was taught to him by an Australian angler as I recall so you can have a good stab at what the FG stands for!
As touched on previously I suspect many have their origins as carp puddle anglers who have made a recent transition to river angling. A different set of ethics which I understand. As one of my pals who only fishes commercials commented "I make as much noise as possible (on reaching his peg) so...
