Here in The Weald of Kent the weather is perfect for catching barbel: it is warm, humid with the occasional light shower.
Richard Walker wrote that these were April days in September, although on this occasion August.

As I fish less than I would wish yesterday's visit to the river was an absolute joy. I caught a mixed bag of gudgeon and perch with the bonus of the smallest pike I have ever seen and a beautiful dace of ten ounces. I also managed to lose a barbel which is not surprising as I was using light...
I have been retired since 2001 but for various reasons have not fished as much as I would have liked. Through BFW I have made several very good friends and been able to fish with them experiencing new waters and learning a lot of new techniques.
I am fishing later today!

As a lad in the 60s I used to watch loads of sea trout being caught by trotting maggots.

Some years ago I introduced a friend to my favourite stretch of the Kennet. It was a beautiful, hot summer day and we were walking the bank and I was pointing out the good swims.
We both quaffed a quantity of Merrydown cider, a favourite tipple of mine at the time, and were in a pleasant frame...
I love using a'pin' but there are occasions when a fixed spool reel comes into its own. I have a Mitchell 300, an Ambidex and small Shimanos, which are little gems

Our barbel have been frolicking for some time, but if the hot weather continues and there is no rain, we shall have to treat them very carefully.
Actually, I shall let them recover for a while, love 'em so much !
