    Clowns

I do not often fish day ticket waters but did today. Normally it is a peaceful and pleasant place to be and for two hours I had the water to myself and was enjoying catching reasonable perch then........ The Carp Boys arrived, they were going to fish overnight! They erected their bivvies...

Claimed 20lb plus barbel in the angler's mail.

John, We have so many named barbel above the weight of the accepted record that they are not worthy of mention. The Democracy Fishery has no barbel weighing less than 21lbs. What we are seeking is a BURBOT bigger than 30lbs and a seahorse of one pound. We can but dream.......... As...

    Which quality centrepin?

I have had a Rapidex and Speedia from new since the 60s and would recommend them both. I note that Speedias can be picked up quite reasonably..... W R Speedia Centrepin Narrow Drum Reel | eBay Great reels! As ever Hugo

Line and Rod rating for casting

Crumbs! I have a beach caster which I use with a massive fixed spool reel and 20lb mono, that casts 4oz leads a very long way. I do not use it on rivers but I suppose if I fished the Tidal Trent then it would come in handy. I also have a rod and reel which would cope with Mahseer on the...

    Surface, middle and bottom feeders

Have been watching the feeding tropical fish in the tank. It is amazing how some of the fish take in a large lump of flake and hold it in their mouths for several seconds before ejecting the flake chewed into small particles. Explains a lot! Regards, Hugo

    Hardest Game In The ?World

Some anglers might find fishing very easy, but if one suffers from arthritis and sciatica then it is somewhat painful. Have just returned from a fish less trip to our local river, which was nevettheless totally fulfilling as kingfishers, owls, swallows and house martins filed the scene, which...

Pinning down your hooklength and / or mainline?

I have often caught barbel by freelining meat and casting onto ranunculus beds. The barbel come and find it exactly like surface feeding carp and the slurping is very similar. May I recommend this method to you, most exciting! Regards, Hugo

Pinning down your hooklength and / or mainline?

Pinning down hook lengths was of course invented on The River Pinn. We find it useful to use plasticine in suitable colours and weights. Of course if one gets snagged in the margins, where else would one fish on such a river, then the BURBOT absolutely adore the stuff, so nothing is wasted...
