    The Barbel by Patrick Chalmers

i just adore this... " But best of all I love the barbels because they roll like big, brown-and-white cats upon golden shallows and sing in the moonlight with the joie de vivre of June. And, because, so, they are all Thames to me and wild-rose time and the streams running down from the weir."...

    Touch Ledgering

Moving on, holding the rod when using floating crust for carp at night has been one of the most exciting methods I have ever used, oh just remembered fishing large lumps of luncheon meat on the surface of the Kennet, when it was full of streamer weed and watching the mouths and whiskers of...

    Touch Ledgering

John, He was using large lumps of meat and I take your point of static fishing on big rivers. Regards, Hugo

    Touch Ledgering

Have just watched a noted angler touch Ledgering for barbel, which is his favoured method, as it is mine. How many BFW members touch ledger? All the time? On occasions? Or never? No criticism of other methods, just interested in knowing members' preferences. Happy Boxing Day...

In reality can Barbel really know the difference ?

Edam used to be the bait for barbel on The Royalty and even I was successful when a schoolboy. I have also had success using Danish Blue and really smelly Blue Stilton, which of course chub love. Years ago on the Kennet large pieces of bread flake were an absolute killer bait for Barbus...

    Penton Hook

David, Such fond memories of that reach of the Thames and even more so that around Marlow, where we lived for 22 years, Marlow Weir - WHERE THAMES SMOOTH WATERS GLIDE In those golden days one could wade out on the sills of Marlow weir, catching roach and chub on silkweed, bigger chub on...

    Night fishing.

Dave, I was writing about fishing for barbel at night when I just happen to prefer touch legering at which you are probably more skilled than I. When it comes to fishing for carp I have very little experience of the waters you mention but would use everything possible to make my stay on...

    Night fishing.

Dave, The rules apply to the Royal Tunbridge Wells Angling Society, not The little red book. I did not make the rules about bivvies and hogging swims. If anglers want to merely fish for barbel as if they were fishing for carp, many have come to barbel fishing from that 'activity', then...

    Night fishing.

Fortunately some clubs do not allow the use of bivvies or hogging a swim for 24hrs. We are fishing for barbel, which is an active way of catching fish unlike sleeping on a chair waiting for some unfortunate named carp to be self hooked and photographed yet again. So sad,,,,,,,

Neil, I respect your opinion and do not mean in any way to denigrate you. I am surprised that you took my post so personally. I bear you no malice and enjoy your contributions to BFW. I just feel that we sometimes get bogged down in minutiae. Fond regards, Hugo
