The Cadence 14ft #3 is an excellent rod for the money IMO and does have the backbone when trotting for barbel. It's only limitation would be if there were nearby snags and you were trying to bully a big fish away from them.

I picked one up years ago, Mike, and found it to be a cracking rod. I still have it but it rarely gets an outing these days. However, If things go to plan I'm hoping to use it when targeting some big tench.🤞

* you can live with camouflage
* like me you sweat a lot
* you have to walk a distance to swims
* you fish in all weathers

Richard, I've had problems with battery-operated ones in freezing conditions. New batteries weren't the solution on that occasion and when both mine and my mates failed we had to borrow some non-digital old-school ones from a nearby angler.
I'd never be happy with only a set of digitals. If they aren't working, you're stuffed. Old school scales might be a bit out, but at least you get a reading. If necessary, this can then be tested when you get home.
Chris, I had a similar problem with a finnicky bite on the Nidd, during a warm spell in December a few years ago: small intermittent taps. In the end I touch-ledgered and decided to hit the first tap. It worked, resulting in a very pleasing big 'nine.' I can't recall having another barbel bite...
