Graham my mother messaged me earlier from Hampshire to say the same: the sun had a bright orange halo! Probably due to sand from the Sahara. It then cleared and she used exactly the same phrase as you to describe it. Its dull and misty here in Leeds.
Just an aside to this. Why are the restrictions on lead shot not applicable to moorland grouse shooting? Surely, the associated pollution will work its way into upland rivers and therefore impact on the flora and fauna along the course of such waterways?

Not ideal, but you could wear a GoPro camera (or similar) when using the Deeper and record audio as well: doing a bit of a commentary about underwater features in relation to bankside markers to help you remember things.
Iain, it's funny how we can give someone an on-the-spot-fine for dropping a cigarette butt (which is fine by me) but allow others to litter the countryside with an incendiary device that could also cause harm to livestock that might try to eat the debris that falls to earth etc. Fifty of the things!

Stephen, it would take forever and be pretty difficult on a big river to get accurate results with a marker float. Also, river beds are frequently changing so the technology would be a time-saver.
