Neil, nothing hinges on what you, me or anyone else believes, and as far as BFW goes there is no burden of proof on anyone. It is a topic that is bound to have conflicting opinions, where some will say "show me the proof" and others will say no "smoke without fire!"
Not sure why you're so sceptical about them breeding Neil. They are mammals, they don't need specific conditions like fish to breed. All they need is a partner!
The "allegedly" is mine, the owner didn't use that word. The type of proof you seek Neil would be difficult to obtain, but remember, absence of proof isn't proof of absence :)
A friend of mine has a skin of a large (bigger than a labrador by quite a bit) cat that was allegedly shot at Long Compton, near Chipping Norton, a few years ago.
Elite barbel is my number one book as Tony had the knack of actually putting you there on the wind and rain swept banks of the Ouse, and suffering the long trudge across fields knee deep in mud after yet another blank, something we can all relate to. This led to a feeling of elation when he...

Big pike are known to inhabit trout reservoirs, but who would have expected this from the Cherwell?
What is very noticeable about this photo is the colour of the river. Presumably due to the soil in the area, which is how Redmire got it's name. Not sure exactly where this is but obviously similar soil to Ross on Wye area where Redmire is.
Yes, I often wonder at the lack of evidence of pug marks. We live in a wet country where the ground would provide plentiful opportunity to track these animals for an experienced tracker. A lack of evidence in the form of kills is also often cited as evidence against the existence of big cats...
That's an interesting point, but in countries where these animals are native, attacks on humans are rare and usually the result of being unable to catch natural prey. The Jim Corbett books, Man-eaters of Kumaon and the Man Eating Leopard of Rudraprayag give some idea of how difficult leopards...
Tell that to the guys who have been scared out of their wits in the Evening Pitch at Redmire. Most people have probably experienced nothing that couldn't be explained, but that doesn't mean inexplicable incidents don't occur.
There are obviously varying degrees of response to this, as people have different opinions on what is ethical/cruel/unnecessary etc., but I think this largely misses the point. What I don't think is up for debate is how much this will impact on MBs career if proven. I really hope it's untrue as...
Apparently some big names have been seen doing this before. Not sure that will help MB one bit though if he is indeed guilty. He doesn't have the profile of the more maverick type of fishing personalities who may have got away with it, he comes across as the very acceptable and genuine face of...
Not sure an out of court settlement would provide sufficient answers. To have any credibility left, not to mention his career, MB needs to go for complete exoneration if he is not guilty.
There is a stretch of the Cherwell called Northbrook, and it was like this exactly. Even on a sunny day it always felt like you were being watched or followed. I never night fished it and seldom went there in the daytime either.
No it isn't the same area Anthony, it's a few miles downstream. The area Tony fished was Bletchingdon, above the road bridge. My experience wasn't as scary as Tony's by any means. Interestingly enough, I did fish that area with a couple of friends one night and at one point each one of us was...
Back in the mid 90s I was fishing the Cherwell at Shipton one September night. The stretch was always nice to night fish below the railway bridge but never really felt the same upstream of the bridge. Nevertheless, I did fish it and accepted it wasn't very comfortable but some nice barbel could...
