The Dettol tip does work, or at least it did for me when stripping the paint off a couple of Speedia Pins. Note however I used neat Dettol and soaked the spool and back plate for 48 hours.

I had a Speedia rachet spring, which I struggled to reshape, so I heated it up, reshaped slightly and it was fine thereafter 👍🏼

If the rachet spring is easy to remove, remove it and if it’s bent/out of alignment, heat it up and straighten.

Have a look at the 2.5lb TC Torrix rods, which Andy Bell is selling in the classified section. I met him to collect a pair of Insight SU Barbel rods last weekend. He brought the Torrix to show me too, I had a waggle and they are very nice Barbel rods. Mint condition too 👍🏻

I too am in the NW and I have previously had rods from Kev Baines at Anglers Workshop in Newcastle-under-Lyme. He did retire, but I then heard he started up again and in the same premises. Tel: 01782 561515 He builds on Harrison blanks and is cheaper than other rod builders in my experience.

I so wish that Mainline Baits still produced the Maple 8 base mix and activator liquid. Never has a bait filled me with so much confidence. Rolled my own and it worked anywhere and year round ☹️
