    Hooks for meat

Stuart, Push the wire through a chunk of soft luncheon meat, spam or meatball etc, thread the meat up the wire so some of the wire sticks out the bottom of the bait, turn the wire into a curve/hook and push it back into the meat. It should stay on, but dont try and cast it too far...

    Hooks for meat

Size 6 Korda wide gapes when you are burying the hook inside, never let me down over the years. I use JRC MBT4 in a size 8 for hair rigging and tie garden wire onto the hair loop. Those Partridge hooks are good as well, still got some of the wire meat hooks from about 12 years ago. Paul

    Rudd

John, Just been invited to help catch/clear some tench from one of the carp society waters on the cotswold water park, it holds some specimen Rudd to over 3lbs, so i'll be hedging my bets on tactics to hopefully snatch one or two half decent rudd from the place, along with the tincas. :D...

    Crucian baits.

Chris, At first i loose loose feed very lightly with hinders little gems well doused in hinders fish pro liquid; when i know there are crus about i increase the feeding, but i'm not sure if this will work for you with king carp around as they may home in and spoil the party. The place i fish...

    Crucian baits.

Chris, Not sure if it will work as i dont have the same problems, but i use a very soft paste about the size of a small marble, which tends to keep the rudd and roach at bay. The crucians nibble at the paste until it is small enough to engulf. I fish this at dead depth under A 2 or 3bb glow...

    new reels

Graham, Perhaps i abused my old REs. :o They werent up to handling my antics on the lower severn a few years back. :D At least you get a big hint with the shimanos these days as they come with a little tube of oil. ;) Paul

    new reels

Dont buy REs they'll last you two possibly three seasons and will then begin to sound and feel like an egg whisk with the shells left on the eggs. If you can afford the XTEAs, they are considerably smoother, better engineered and long lived. The 5000s will cast 80 yards, which is plenty on big...

    Wellies

Graham, Neoprene is far more comfortable, especially if you walking any distance. I would avoid the wychwood neoprene wellies; ive had mine for less than a year and the sole is allowing water to get in under the base of the neoprene, through to my feet. Paul

    Hinders elip pellets

All, I wouldnt worry about the change in fishmeal content, the current batch of hinders elips contain exactly the same oil as previously in content and volume, it is just the fishmeal that has changed due to availability. They may appear dry or dryer, but they contain the same amount of oil...

Culling of a Protected Species - Implications!

Goshawk do seem to be around that area, i saw some a few years back along with peregrine, which nest in the rock. Love birds of prey and was horrified when i first heard about the buzzard situation. There is no reason why buzzards cant live around pheasant, more get killed on the roads than by...

Culling of a Protected Species - Implications!

Chris, If you are genuinely interested there are goshawk at the Yat Rock area nr Simmonds Yat on the Wye. Not easily spotted, just occasionally. Very impressive birds. Paul

Culling of a Protected Species - Implications!

RSPB: U-turn on Defra plan to control Buzzard numbers Looks like the proposals have been rejected after public outcry. Good news. :D Paul

    One for the twitchers....................

Very likely to be a hobby, dark and light colouration, close to the thames (water, where they often feed) and chasing insects. They have been here for at least two weeks. I saw my first on the water park sunday b4 last and a mate has now seen two groups of several birds feeding over the lakes...

Greys Prodigy TX 11ft Specimen 1.0lb

Very difficult to find a perfect perch rod; i bought two 11/13ft rovex wilson 1.25lb avon/quivers and they are far too heavy. The closest ive got to the right type of rod is also a couple of 11ft pellet waggler rods (browning syntec). Paul

    Korda goo for barbel

Dave, You can use it however you like, but probably best as a dip, poured into pva bags with your particles or onto stiks or squirt it on your feeders ie onto small vessels. Think you'd be wasting it in a groundbait mix. Paul

    Korda goo for barbel

Using this stuff (corn smoke) at the moment and it does create a scent/sight trail which would make it useful for barbel but better for stillwater species; the main benefit for me is the almost fluorescent cloud it creates in stillwater, which makes it impossible to ignore when fish are cruising...
