Big bream rods, not for long casts - Barbel rods?

I've never tried (or even seen) the specialist quiver, nor tried the Brench, but I've got a couple of the Multi Classic barbel/quiver rods (one I got on eBay, one I found in the clearance bin in a local tackle shop - managed to get both for a bargain) which I use in fast/flooded water and think...

    Some centrepin casting success!

The Wallis is something I've never been able to get adequate at, let alone adept, despite years of trying. Nottingham cast has always worked for me (though agree with Paul above RE having an extra ring near the butt) and if I want to cast out quite far I take 4 loops, but obviously the more...

Big bream rods, not for long casts - Barbel rods?

A friend of mine swears by the Shimano Purist Brench for big bream. He's tried a few others since it first came out, but that's the one he keeps going back to. They pop up on eBay quite often. If you want something with a softer action than the Drennans, any half decent Avon rod should...

Trying to remember a coarse monthly mag from the 90s...

That's one of two issues I found covers for online. Like I said, the cover layout and graphics don't ring a bell (they're VERY vintage IYCF aren't they?), but everything else about it seems to fit. Could be. No, definitely not that - I only became aware of that one YEARS after it ceased...

Trying to remember a coarse monthly mag from the 90s...

I think it might be Practical Coarse Fishing - started early 90s and seems to have been short lived. However I can only find a couple of examples online and none of them ring a bell in terms of front page graphics.

Trying to remember a coarse monthly mag from the 90s...

I got excited for a moment as the simple title "Coarse Fishing" rang a bell and the mention of them going bust mid production would have fit their quick disappearance, but having just googled it I see that was around in the 80s before I started, so it's definitely not that either. Neil - good...

Trying to remember a coarse monthly mag from the 90s...

Nope, definitely not Big Fish World. It was more like IYCF in terms of its layout. Also seem to remember it had a red banner at the top.

Trying to remember a coarse monthly mag from the 90s...

Sorting through all my fishing books and mags last night (most of them still boxed up from when we moved 16 years ago) cos there's not much else to do at the mo, and I'm missing a box of mags that I can only assume either got lost during the move or were accidentally taken down the tip prior to...

A fish for all seasons part 2

Fantastic - I didn't even know that part 1 was also available! Neil - I fished there once in the mid-to-late 90s and, whilst I caught some lovely fish (although nothing anywhere near approaching 2lb), it was with an endless barrage of people going by. If I didn't have a general audience it...

Sad times just makes us think

Gerry I totally get where Roger is coming from, but I (and no doubt others) agree with your sentiment and think it's a good idea to remind people of what's really important. I haven't even been thinking of fishing whilst this got more serious the other week, and I daresay that any major global...

Sad times just makes us think

Disagreeing with endless tory cuts to the NHS and public services (which is surely a sensible thing to disagree with, no?) does not automatically equal a vote for the reds and it bewilders me why people always think you're a far left loon when you criticise the tories - other colours are (and...

Sad times just makes us think

Graham I haven't mentioned any other countries at all, and I only "highlight" the UK because it's the country we live in. Also I don't know what this has to do with communism(?), something else I never mentioned. (although baton beating would break up those groups of teens I've seen walking...

Sad times just makes us think

Graham T - it's not political points scoring, it's a strong echo of Gerry's points. The tories hate the NHS and the public sector and have done for decades. Without those this country really would be on its knees, as the current situation proves.

    Close season plans

I think this is one of those agree to disagree situations. I personally don't believe that fishing falls into the same exercise category, and I say that as a rover, but others obviously do. For what it's worth the "selfish" comment wasn't aimed at anyone on here, it was more a general swipe...

    Close season plans

Jim - with all due respect, I don't think now is the right time for sarcasm or smarts. One daily exercise on your own is a "safer" risk and more to do with maintaining health. Going fishing and taking part in a group cycle aren't really the same thing.

Nicely put Gerry. If Joris and his blue meanies try to do anything to the NHS after this, they'll likely be publically hanged.

    Close season plans

Anyone considering going fishing during the next three weeks (or longer) PLEASE DON'T. In this case it's not about whether or not you're spreading the virus, it's about you being a potential risk for the emergency services if something happened because you couldn't heed some very simple advice...

Are any small river barbel populations thriving?

Affirmative - it wasn't publicised, but I've seen the photos.

    Close Season Retained

Mixed emotions for me... On the one hand I was all in favour of some sort of change (although I know my preference for ad-hoc closing during any spawning period - like some clubs do with their lakes - is practically and logistically impossible on a river), on the other I've always happily taken...

Are any small river barbel populations thriving?

Staggering. I wasn't aware that any clubs still allowed it. I can't think of a single club around me which DOESN'T specifically say "no barbel in keepnets", even in matches (where they're weighed immediately and put back). In my locality the Somerset Frome and Chew are coming on. Most of...
