I love this thread. It's inspired me to read Confessions of a Carp Fisher by BB again. Great book. I had it on almost permanent loan from the library when I was in my teens. I'm 55 now.
Black pepper spam is better than normal. Try using both and alternating. I did and the results are very conclusive. I moved on from this to other flavours that I am less willing to share... yet 😁
I fished that very same area when I was 18. 37 years ago! Went camping and fishing for a week with a mate. I can definitely remember catching dace, grayling, trout and barbel on the stick float and maggot. I remember walking a long way and fishing lots of swims. The barbel were only small but I...
I thought that Dynamite made their own pellets and so you would think they would be more consistent. I have had a lot of success using Dynamite pellets of the various flavours and sizes.
In no particular order from me as well.

My first barbel was about a pound around 30 years ago from the Trent. Took me 27 years to get an eleven pounder! Never seriously fished for them during that time though. However, since the eleven I've become obsessed with barbel. What amazing fish. I even took my 18 year old daughter for an...
We weigh fish because we want to. Surely, the significance of various weights means different things to different people. I like to be as accurate as possible and, to me, I would rather catch a 12lb barbel to an eleven pound something barbel. I would even more like to get a 14 pounder (not...
I use Berkley Trilene xl in 10lb. It's clear, knots well, durable, thinnish for a "normal" line and the barbel don't care that it's not as flexible as braid.
I have korum digitals. Had them for about a year. I've tested them every couple of months and they are very accurate. I carry spare batteries and a backup set of Avons. I have read some bad reviews but mine have been great so far. My close eyesight is poor so the big bright display is just what...
Regular feeding can also bring the fish on the feed. It doesn't have to be massive amounts as long as it isn't being eaten by hoards of small fish. Doesn't have to be expensive as well. I use hemp seed with a few 6mm pellets mixed in. Can be introduced by feeder or catapult.
I come from a...
The gripz hooks are just as good. Just a bit more expensive and a lot easier to remove than a barbed hook.
I was using a different hook at the beginning of the season, had two hook pulls, changed to gripz and had no pulls since. Over 40 barbel to 12lb on them.
I've not fished Collingham for a good few years but it is a big tidal river so depending on the tide you may need a lot of lead.
I have fished Burton Joyce a lot in the past and, while it does have barbel, they are not prolific.
I fish just a few miles from where this picture was taken and only see the occasional other angler. No bivvies allowed and many more fish to be caught!
If I turn up and there are two cars in the car park I go elsewhere.
