    Piscario centrepins

If someone says to me “that’s not a centrepin it’s a bearing reel” I ask them about the bushing in their “true” pin ;)

    Waterproof jacket

I think there are many good (maybe better, certainly less expensive) alternatives to GTX. Their ePTFE patent expired (mid ‘98 I think?) and in any case most manufacturers are moving away from ePTFE to ePE etc. GTX are certainly very good at marketing.

    Piscario centrepins

Looking at the info on companies house, the company is dormant.

    Piscario centrepins

Yeah certainly not cheap. No idea what Mg alloy is used in reels, AZ91 is a common one for alloy wheels if they’re cast (90% Mg, 9% Al) or AZ31 (~95% Mg) I think if formed. The world of Shimano materials is odd as they use Hagane as a trademark, so then say “Hagane body made from...

I think the MB Okuma blurb mentioned magnesium or mag alloy. Shimano also use magnesium in some of their big pit reels.

    Reel experience day

Brilliant write up Richard and the reel is a thing of beauty. Totally with you on the rim-mounted check lever, spot on 👍

    Drennan Acolyte Specimen Rod

If not using a centrepin, I use a Shimano Aero XR 5000 on my 13 footer. A very nice reel.

    Drennan Acolyte Specimen Rod

There’s definitely a lot to be said for good balance/weight distribution versus weight on its own. I’ve got a Daiwa Connoisseur 15ft that tips the scales around 230g but it feels “perfect” in the hand and can trot with it all day no problem. An excellent rod. Aesthetically I do miss the gloss...

    Drennan Twistlock Handle ...again !!!

Looks like quite a lot of wear on the locking mechanism (the grey part screwed on the left hand side pole in your pic). If after cleaning it won’t lock up, contact Drennan for a new one. These may help for reassembly and cleaning:

    DAIWA SENSOR LINE PROBLEMS

    NGT CENTREPIN ... blimey !!!

Cheers @Richard Isaacs 👍 I’ve always done it but on autopilot. I thought the other day it seemed a bit counterintuitive for bearing reels, but makes sense. @Barry Peck is the NGT all aluminium? I think it is, different to the Korum, which I think shares a factory with the DAM Quick Shadow reel.

    NGT CENTREPIN ... blimey !!!

Honest question why put oil on the shaft if it’s got bearings?

    DAIWA SENSOR LINE PROBLEMS

Yes I’ve had the same problem as have several others. https://www.maggotdrowning.com/forums/threads/diawa-sensor-crumbling-spool.239213/ https://www.maggotdrowning.com/forums/threads/daiwa-sensor-bulk-spools.240445/ https://www.maggotdrowning.com/forums/threads/bulk-spools-cracking.197605/...

    Catching at any cost

I agree with you, very marmite and honestly not a fan of the platforms but I get why they did it in terms of accessibility. It can be like shooting fish in a barrel but I find it useful if I’m testing out a new float, bait, rig as it takes the “are there fish in my swim” variable out of the...

    Cheaper pins

Out of the pins you listed, I’d go with either Trudex or Rapidex. They can be great little reels and perfect for trotting. Personally I don’t like the Speedia or Supreme for trotting, they just feel clunky. Trudex has the advantage of being able to Wallis cast which you can’t with the Rapidex...
