I like to put some bait in and let it simmer for an hour or so. By which time my bank sticks are in, hooklengths baited and attached, coffee (or Whisky) poured, landing net and unhooking mat set up, leaving me just enough time to take in the surroundings before casting both rods in :D
I'm a barbel novice yet had a great year last year on a lowly stocked Debyshire Derwent.
I too make my own boilies, props to you for that :)
Rigs don't need to be complicated from what i see.
I use Avid Carp Captive coated hookklink in 15lbs and use Daiwa Tournament ST mainline in 15lbs and...
AA baits are great. Went into the garage today to take stock of my boilie making ingredients only to find mice had been into it all and ruined it,, Went on to AA baits website today to replace it all. Should have it this week sometime :)
Good choice.
I had the most recent Powermesh 2.75's (and sold them) the rings were flimsy compared to the old powermesh rods. I wouldn't have confidence in them long term.
My PB Barbel is 12 n half lb as of last autumn. Would be nice to get a 14lb+ this year.
Also get amongst the decent Chub and maybe a bonus river Carp or 2.
Making my own boilies last year was a game changer. Had loads of really good captures and have no confidence in off-the-shelf mainstream boilies anymore.
Difference is i suppose i can put really expensive HNV ingredients in mine whereas commercial rollers need to think about profit margins.
I have a pair of the Aventa Baitfeeders in 6000 size and swear by them.
Amazing reel for the money and I've played quite a few Barbel on them last year. Also great cranking power when retrieving heavy feeders in strong flow.
Bought to replace, and prefer them to, my Shimano Medium baitrunner...
I've heatshrunk 22.5mmx3mm green ones to my rod tips and they show up well, not as bright as chemical lights but visible enough.
Gardner I think they were.
THIS.
A number of Barbel have done me in snags on the lower Derwent this year. If anything I need something more brutish to stop the runs early and keep them out of the overhanging trees and rafts.
My current 12ft 2lb rods are capable but I need to step up the main line (12lb Tournament ST...
Don't feed too much.
I've stopped spopping in ungodly amounts of hemp, pellets and boilies and instead fish a PVA bag on the hook with jjust 3 chopped boilies and a pinch of pellet and my catch rate has shot up.
I would avoid the 20 GS BR LT reel, it's essentially the same as an Emcast BR LT which I have and is a terrible reel, awful line lay and very cheap feeling.
If you can still get them, the Okuma Aventa baitfeeders in 5000 or 6000 size are top notch for £80 each and prefer them over my £260...
Shove it in a food processor and blitz it down to crumb, then start adding water a little dribble at a time until it comes together again.
Same as you would if you wanted to make a paste wrap out of boilies.
