I'm a fan of the Greys rods having 2 of the TXL Barbel rods in 2lb t/c. Versatile too having an Avon top as well as a tip carrier section.
One of the nicer Greys rods is the PB Barbel, in stock here: https://www.mainwaringsfishing.co.uk/product/greys-prodigy-pb-barbel-rod-12ft-2-25lb/
I love the overengineered way.
I'll roll my own cheesy boilies in a HNV way with proper cheese and after the drying period I'll blitz some up in a food processor and turn into a paste wrap.
To make it hookable could add some plain flour before the water.
I only have 2 Barbel rods and 2 Barbel reels.
2 Pike rods and 2 Pike reels.
The rest of my feeder rods I have as many reels and just put on what I fancy at the time 😀
Is there a website anywhere that tells us what current water temps are?
I'll be moving house soon so be handy to find out remotely than drive 40 minutes to the Trent only to turn back around again if the water is too cold 🥶
Would be nice if the level monitoring stations also output water...
Okuma Aventa baitfeeders are amazing for the money.
Quick drag at the front so the baitrunner can be an option or not, according to taste.
I've got a pair in 6000 size that have accounted for numerous Barbel and i'm well chuffed with them.
They punch about 2.5x above their price point and...
What you up to next Saturday / Sunday Kev? I've had luck at Fiskerton in the daytime the last couple of times I've been, weather should still be mild next weekend 👍
Better making your own baits i think, anything for sale (either commercially or even niche HNV baits) are usually made to a price. Of course they'll catch fish, but what if you can make it yourself, but (possibly) better?
Making them yourself you can make sure no corners are cut and there's no...
Essentially a higher retrieve is less cranking power (think about the gears on a pushbike, the faster gears are harder to pedal)
Winding back a big feeder against the flow is easier with a slower retrieve.
A caveat though being handle length. The Shimano Medium LC has a longer handle than say...
I've not noticed the Okuma retrieve to be particularly slow. Rather the Shimano retrieve is on the fast side.
A slower retrieve can help avoid the hooklength twisting up but I use coated braid hooklengths most of the time so not an issue for me.
The Shimanos are a very nice reel but not worth...
I Like a day ticket session every now and then at Fiskerton but at heart i'm more of a night time Barbeller.
I was wondering if anyone has any info on the HKS syndicate? Contact and if/when they take on new members?
Thanks in advance :)
I agree some might work but hasn't typically been the case for me. I have no confidence in stuff without a nutritional value so to speak.
Only way to find out is to experiment I guess 🙂
My latest concoction has been catching me fish, using actual parmesan and actual pepperami firesticks to make said boilies.
My base mix is from AA baits and works wonderfully for me.

Stick to putting real cheese in them and not the...
Hopefully you'll keep your gear Arch, there's still fun to be had on a day ticket / guest ticket social at places like Fiskerton and East stoke / Sheldons, and the banks aren't too bad either :)
