    Tackle in Lidl this week

I've bought some reels direct from China they're good quality and cost practically nothing. They definitely look like Daiwa, same screws etc. They're about 10% of the cost of Daiwa.

    Tackle in Lidl this week

Their Parkside tools are made in Germany and are really good.

    Lesson Learnt. Rod Posting

I'm surprised that there isn't more of a demand for multi piece rods. Almost all Salmon rods between say 8 ft and 16 ft, both spinning and fly are almost all 4 or 6 piece and come in hard tubes. Can't recall ever hearing about any damaged in transit. It's also much easier to transport and hide...

Daiwa tournament pro 13/15 match rod

If I had that £400 budget I'd get 2 Acolytes. Plus models handle barbel fine.

    Wind

Surprised that nobody has posted the old saying, which has a few variations but the same sentiment always. "When the wind's in the west the fish bite the best, when the wind's in the east the fish bite the least, when the wind's in the south it blows the bait in their mouth, when the wind's in...

    lighter float rod

Personally I wouldn't look further than the Acolytes if you need the length. My local tackle dealer considers the 17' the best balanced float rod he's ever used, he's even bought one for himself.

Wanted-Cadence 15ft #3 float rod could swap for diawa connoisseur

I've got a friend with a 15' Cadence # 2 who'd be willing to do that swap. PM me and I can put the two of you together. Thanks.

    Trotting for barbel

https://barbel.co.uk/forum/threads/floatfishing-for-barbel-by-keith-speer.5676/ This explains the late great Keith Speer's way. Well worth a read.

    Using a drogue whilst fishing

I'd advise getting hold of a copy of a Bob church book, Reservoir Trout fishing, which has a few chapters on boat handling using drogues, Lee boards etc, on Graham and Rutland. I've done a fair bit of reservoir boat fishing although I'm no expert I can offer a little bit of advice The size of...

    Vintage magazine article

There's a tale of a similar catch in an old book I've got, possibly by 'Red Spinner', and the last line is something like 'and not another was caught from that spot for the rest of the year, to my knowledge.'

    Vintage magazine article

In Victorian times barbel fishing, certainly on the Thames, involved employing a boatman who would bait up for quite a time, possibly a week or more, with thousands of lobworms. Recall 5 thousand for a week mentioned. Then commence the slaughter, which it was. No catch and release back then...

Choosing between three barbel rods to get me started

You'll be fine with that rod. I use an old Drennan 1.25lb TC for the upper Lea and I've never felt the need for anything heavier. I also use centerpins exclusively. There's nowhere on the upper you can't reach with a simple one finger lob out and the ratchet makes a great bite indicator. And...

If You Could Offer One Tip...

Indeed, an acquaintance is a very keen and successful carp angler but not exclusively. A few years ago he was fishing a lightly stocked barbel river which contains some real whoppers. Several captures over 15lb up to nearly 20lb. He armed himself with a powerful torch and when it was dark he...

    looking good

Went for a few hours on the upper Lea yesterday, not the super popular stretch. Air temp was 13C and river flow was about average. Hoping for some nice roach and it wasn't to be. 1 small chub and a few half decent Perch to my trotted maggots. That is until I connected with a heavy, slow, and...

Recommendations sought: Float Rod for trotting for Roach & Chub

I'd also recommend the Acolyte plus compact if you can get one. It's the same 2 piece + butt section configuration as the tench and specimen which is quite a bit beefier in action.

    Soaked pellets

I cover enough for the session in water in a bait container. Pour off almost all the water and leave for about an hour. (4mm/6mm pellets). This plugs the ends and the feeder is filled with dry pellets. Works for me on small rivers.

    Wye update

From what I've heard a large part of the problem is the proliferation of organic chicken farming and the run off of the inevitable waste polluting the water.

    Whitlock landing net. Replacement net.

Common complaint amongst Salmon fishers that the mesh on those is too small.

TFG Freeflow centerpin ratchet spring broken.

Thanks for that. I've already got another though. Would thoroughly recommend them to anyone, they're brilliant.

    Avon day/night tickets

Ringwood tackle handle most day and other tickets. I met with someone on a Christchurch AC venue recently and he was using a weekly ticket, so they are available, not sure about days. 2 hours after sunset is the rule, at least at Winkton. Give Ringwood tackle a call and they can give you the...
