    Thames head dries

Can you imagine if any other commodity was like water? They supply us with something that’s falls out the sky, loose half of it during the delivery and charge you. You then get charged a second time, often by a different company to remove it from your home and treat it. Half the time they...

    Bank tramp or tackle tart?

My tackle bag and kit is like my work tools. I don’t carry unnecessary stuff, I do have redundancy and it’s very organised. I’m one of those people where everything has a specific home. Why? Because my mind is a scatter box, I don’t want to waste time wondering if I left something behind or...

If that’s in reference to Richards recovery idea, as stated that’s a year round assistance idea not an excuse. If it’s reference to modifying river channels, that’s to help life survive the changes of a warming world so there’s something left to fish for when the heat waves break.

Very much so, what suits current flood defence methods and useage isn’t always whats best for the environment. Large channelised sections are great for flood relief or boats but poor for biodiversity and environmental resilience. Expensive isn’t always about the primary cost, as we’re all aware...

No. I’m suggesting it does not need to be complex, your suggestion is immaterial to my point.

That’s simply an engineering issue and part of the process is as old as the hills. It requires investment and care, two things that are in short supply. It’s about creating resilience to the system not reinventing the wheel.

The tech is there, you just need the ability to make it mobile. I use some little 12v pumps for replacing evaporation, the kinda thing they put in solar fountains. If you could drive one off a power pack you’d be in buisness. Couple the discharge to a Venturi and your away.

I’m sure if you started doing the maths there you’d reach a conclusion. In a warming world where we expect these things to be more frequent and extreme we would be wise to make modifications that increase flow and agitation. We’d also be sensible to decrease unnecessary abstraction and organic...

When fish are packed for shipping that’s quite often what’s done. The bag is inflated with O2 or the vat is injected with it.

    Prolonged heat

Yeah, the contribution of oxygen to the water by a typical battery powered air pump would in my assumption not be sufficient to replenish the oxygen uptake of a large fish like a barbel. It’s lip service. If I remember correctly only about 20% of the air injected into water via an air pump...

It’s been a bit more bareable here last few days, but of cloud cover at times and breeze. The Avon seems to have plateaued at about 20/21. The weekend is forecast for mid 20s but Monday, Monday is forecast for 32.

I notice the algae bloom is attributed to the temperature and no reference to the nutrient soup with it.

Totally agree. What I was trying to point out is that there’s no magic number that means things are safe or unsafe, there are multiple factors at play. Care is always required.

    Prolonged heat

What water temperatures are being recorded around the country on your rivers that are helping to make the decision to not fish? Air temperature is, as in winter is not always in step. The D.Stour and H.Avon which run so close will be completely different at present. Saying its irresponsible to...
