It was somewhat proved in an experiment by Sparsholt College on carp a while ago with high oiled pellet v low oiled pellet. Seems to destroy/damage the internal organs thus ultimately shortening life span when feeding the high oiled to cyprinid species. Also using pellet in winter, cold water...
The fact that the EA/NRA have re-stocked probably tens of millions of barbel and other species into our ailing rivers for the last 20+ years, to aid and maintain the survival of species in UK rivers.... must be taken into consideration also...but is it!
What would our rivers be like today...
Quotes from above.
"The idea is that while perhaps just 10 per cent of glass eels will develop into elvers in the wild, the figure rises to 90 per cent among those put into tanks for three months."
"Under the SEG’s standard, about half of the glass eels that are caught and put into tanks to...
If the EA/Commercial eel killers are killing off the 'remaining' UK eels returning to the Sargasso Sea to breed, then the UK is participatiing in the extinction process!
Quote: "Re Sustainable Eel Group. An organisation funded by the comercial eel interests who are paid to come up with smoke and mirror fact and figures to justify their continued rape of our eel resource."
Spot on!
Even though the Eel is now a UK protected species (on par with Salmon etc)...
I have to agree with Neil on this. Having received copies of the 'original' full size pics from Nigel and Mark (to which I am grateful) which are in high resolution and much different in quality to the re-sized ones put up on BFW in low resolution.
I am still not sure regarding the bright...
The EA and NE may even re-consider their previous decision to stop weed cutting after another five years!
They still carry out mechanical reciprocal blade weed cutting on other rivers in the UK with no regard for environmental protection, SSSI/SAC species and area) of the rivers, fish and...
Nigel...the question in Parliament was asked in defence of farmer’s commercial interests and income, influenced by the NUF and a local pro farmers MP.....and not for the protection of the SSSI river environment and its fish, wildfowl and wildlife! Farmers were up in arms at the local meeting I...
Mark… to keep you informed on the ID’s... After looking at your picture of the other side of your fish, to which I am grateful (on BFW Gallery), your 14.3 caught in September 2012, it 'is' one of Nigel's 3 x16's caught in November 2012...in my opinion of course.
Again. In my opinion... 2 of...
Shaun..No one is disputing the amount of barbel caught or the weights stated!
The identification of each fish is what i am researching.
You may also be suprised to know that some barbel do travel great distances and return, including navigating weirs, locks, fish passes, adjoining...
Thanks Mark. I'll look out for it when it goes up.
If it is the same fish as one of Nigels 16's, (which i think is possible), then that is a pretty 'normal' weight gain in autumn for the calibre of some fish over that period of time, from when you last caught it!... Cheers..Ray
It's not hard to believe for me Nigel as I know the score and have seen bunches of large fish travelling around together many times. As all 3 are potential River Nene records, you can now see why that I and others try to keep the river record list as accurate as possible for the barbel...
Mark. Yes you are correct... a bit of muddling with the timing/order of the 3 pics.
Even more/muddling/confusing, is why the main good daylight pic (assuming 16lb) is dated as being caught/taken in 'January 2012' (submitted 5th November 2012), whilst the other 2 are dated as caught/taken and...
Nigel/Mark...A barbel can drop that amount of weight 'instantly' (due to shock of capture) if its intestine is/was full at the time. It has been recorded with other large barbel before. It is nothing to do with the mis-weighing or the weighing scales.
Well done Nigel, great catch. Can u put the other 2 pics of your 16's up.
It is not uncommon for a group of the larger fish in a stretch to hang out together, as we used to experience on the Gt Ouse and other rivers and stretches. Even when some of these fish were caught, and put back, they...
Photos taken by different cameras and lenses, and also the way anglers hold fish can be deceptive to the eye, as is the size of anglers holding fish! Some look too big or small for the weight stated! You have to do research on the capture/weight history of a particular fish and then scrutinise...
