    OCD and fishing.

I’ve heard of first world problems and all that, but toilet “roll twist” avoidance seems to be on a whole new level. Every day’s a school day, it would seem.

not that silly folded point on the roll end, surely? When I hang the washing on the line my misses comes along to check I’ve done it right. Invariably, I haven’t, so she then follows me up the length of the line correcting my poor hanging skills. The only noticeable difference I can see, after...

    Whipping thread colour(s)

I done my Augur ‘Carp Special’ in this. Rarely seen on carbon rods but “jasper” in its various different colour combinations is always striking.

The maroon and copper looks very nice.

    Whipping thread colour(s)

What colour is the rod blank? Black on black would just look a little boring to me as would any other matching colour schemes., When I was restoring cane rods I always preferred something like garnet with pale gold toppings and intermediates. Not quite so relevant for a modern carbon rod...

    OCD and fishing.

Mott The Hoople’s bassist Peter Overend Watts used to employ much the same tactics favouring neon pink carp rods as a reaction against the standard green/black/camo norm. I do like eccentrics, I really do. And I admire the bravery of the chap, but I’m far too conventional and conservative for...

Surely There’s some sort of support group out there for you Simon.

    OCD and fishing.

As another one who uses a mixture of vintage and modern gear, the only OCD trait I see in myself is that I can’t bear seeing the both mixed together at the same time. I recall seeing a picture of Peter Stone in Waterlog Magazine (I think) and he had a Shimano baitrunner paired up to MK IV and...

On the Telly - Grand fishing adventure

Last night’s episode of Grand Fishing Adventure was pretty crap it must be said. I turned the tv off and pondered how not only cream seems to rise to the top but also the occasional turd. This, by contrast , is rather lovely, as indeed are nearly all of the Fallons films. I often spend time day...

On the Telly - Grand fishing adventure

This is appalling. I’m trying to figure out how this could even happen during playing a fish out and can only assume that somehow it’s happened in the net. The possibilities for damage with a heavily spawn bound big carp and that thing in the net don’t bear thinking about.

Luckily for OMC and Ali Hamidi there are a lot of donuts about. To misquote Mr Disraeli… There are three kinds of donuts: donuts, damned donuts and angling donuts. As it would happen, I very nearly fell into the later category myself by almost acquiring a Magic Twig as part of a larger auction...

On the Telly - Grand fishing adventure

Such a shame really. The premise of the show is quite good and the subject matter has huge appeal. I mean, Comizo barbel fishing in Spain, who on here doesn’t fancy some of that on their TV? If only they could get a decent presenting crew who have a little maturity, charm and wit about them...

On the Telly - Grand fishing adventure

I saw about ten minutes of Monster Carp a few years ago now and immediately became an x-watcher, mainly because of Ali. I’ve since watched a few of the last two seasons episodes and agree with both of the above posts: it’s actually rather watchable now and Dovey and Spooner have an easy going...

    Wallis Casting Tuition

This is very true but I’d also add that learning just how much of a pull is required for the distance desired and also when to break the drum. Getting these both right is the hey to avoiding over runs and the resulting birds nest. I’ve always found that twisting the rod slightly so the handles...

Item of tackle you wish you hadn't sold.

Well, if we are talking books then I deserve to be given a thoroughly good wedgie for selling Terry Lampard’s First Cast. As for selling Jeff De La Mura‘s Hooked On Floats - guilty your honour! - then only a damned good beating will suffice.

    Bank chair

I do hope it’s not the case for your chair Stephen, but in my own previous experience chairs that lack the bracing brackets at the junction between the leg and the cross bar tend to fail fairly regularly. Constant flexing at the weld and it ends up breaking, as it did on two of my old chairs...
