How do you know the cost of a bowler reel isn't worth it unless you've had one, or at least handled one? They certainly are not brittle, your just making ridiculous assumptions there. Regarding speedia reels, i've had several, and imo the okuma bowler, or any of the okuma centrepin reels are...

Ok, thanks for that Richard 👍. I heard it somewhere that pure magnesium spontaniously combusted in oxygen.

I think the backplate and spool are made of the same material. The one in the link looks to have had an accident or two. It appears the rim has been polished to try removing some damage which is still visible.

Yes, I realise that now 👍. I'm not sure if the magnesium is pure or mixed with something else, or even wether you can actuallu male something from pure magnesium. I suspicious as to wether the foot and the face plate may be alloy, so that might be the reason it weights more than if it was all...

I have no idea about the percentages of magnesium etc are, I only know that the spec's on the box state the reel is constructed from magnesium with no mention of a mixture of materials. Back when the reels were made magnesium may not have been as expensive as it is today? Also bear in mind the...

I just dug mine out and on the box it states the reel is made from magnesium. Weighed the reel and it was 192grms.

To many people a centrepin reel is a centrepin reel and they're all the same. In reality, the skill level of the user will reveal the hidden qualities of a high end centrepin reel.

If sicario were still producing their reels I think I would most likely take a punt on one. As I said, I did try to contact the company, but with no joy. I assumed they must have wraped up making them, maybe they didn't sell enough to be a worth while project, or maybe the company has just...

I tried to enquire about them a couple or more months back but it seemed like the actual buisness had folded. The reason I say that is I had no answer from the phone etc.

Thanks Richard, they are nice reels, I forget how many were made, I think it was 100 of each. They came with a little card/certificate with FJTs signature on it and a reel holder/bag embroiderd in red with FJT. I have no idea if Garry supplies a case with his new reels nowadays?

Here's the actual FJT reels, the wider line lay reel is called the specialist and the narrower model is called the trotter, nice reels..... I haven't taken a pic of the back, or I can't see it if I have. If I had a pic of the back it would show the ratchet operation is a small button type...

Excellent stuff, a great write up! I bet your made up with your new toy 😎👍. I know it must of all been interesting, but, one part of the build that interests me is the anodising and how the little barbel and script is attatched. Is it cut into the alloy ? And how is it coloured white? Or is it...
