Have just acquired this rod from a lovely chap in Cambridge - it’s a 11.3” century pulse TM barbel, and has removable end eye to fit tips.
It’s in lovely condition but some of the graphics have faded. I intend to use it for chubbing rather than for its intended quarry
Just wondering if anyone else has one or knows anything about it? I believe it was designed with the help of Tony miles but not sure of its TC, feels like it might be 1.25 - 1.5Ib region. The Quivertips don’t have a rating on them but guessing 1-2oz? Also feels like the tips should have another eye half way between the two it came with, they obviously never did have one but very acute bend in them without it?
Also, anyone know date of manufacture roughly?
Any info appreciated
Thanks

Hi Alan. Think these were built around late nineties/beginning of millennium by New Dawn Rods. Malc Rooker was the main person behind the company. Think he built the Tony Miles/Trefor West rods before they later went their own way with Double T and the green Harrison Rods. I have some old Specialist Angler magazines from the period so will see if they advertised and will post if I find anything. Can't answer your question on the quivertip ringing though...

Thanks mate that is great….a lot of info out there is contradicting so if any ads that would be nice 👍
Hi Alan
I have the TW 12' Century Pulse, awesome rod. I got it in 1998 and I bought from Joe Taylors in Bicester. A few years ago I bought the Lone Angler landing net handle from Trefor and met him in a pub in Southam to collect it. We got talking about the Pulse rods and he said the guy making them, Century I presume, had stopped making rod blanks which is why he and Tony Miles then went to Harrison. I believe Century were not the easiest to do business with either. The TM models were 11' 3 and the TW ones were 12' I would be fairly sure yours is 1.5 TC as well. One thing I did find is over the years was the carbon spigot on the join wore down and the top section became loose. This was a simple issue to solve, I just applied some glue, let it set and then sanded it down to the required thickness. This has kept tight ever since. I still use this rod exclusively for barbel fishing and it is also my main tench rod. I don't see any reason to ever change it.

Thanks Alex, the one I got had hardly been used, looking forward to using it on the river. I have seen the 11.3 described as both 1.5 and 1.25Tc maybe there was two models

Hi Alan. If it's the one I think it is it was made by Malc Rooker with input from Trefor West and Tony Miles. Well, they put their names to it atleast. It was regularly advertised in the 'Barbel Fisher' magazine ( of the Barbel Society) in the 90s I think it was though the exact dates I would need to look up.
Tony preferred a shorter rod of around 1 1/4 lb tc whereas Trefor went for a longer more 'whippy' rod. I read this somewhere, probably in their book 'Quest for Barbel'. That doesn't help you much I know but I would expect the tc to be between 1 1/4 and 1 1/2 lb. I should think it will have a through action as most rods did from that era. I'm sure it will make a fine rod for either Chub or close in Barbel fishing. 🙂

Thanks for this, yes a lovely through action 👍

I've never seen or handled any of the Century Pulse rods but have only ever heard glowing reports. Century have always had a reputation for producing very high class blanks which they should be for at that price, around £375 on todays money.

Would love to get my hands on the 10.6 chub rod.

I have owned the TM Chub rod, the TW Upstreamer, & the TW Floodwater rods in the past. Great rods. I contacted Century about extra quiver tips for the TM chub rod and found a load of them in the back of their warehouse in a very dusty box. That was going back a few years now.

I’ve wondered why I’ve never heard more about the 1.75 armalites. Is it because they’re not suited particularly to barbel fishing, or because they’re expensive and as such have never developed much of a following.
