Re-corking a WH Norris split cane rod

I have a vintage WH Norris cane fly fishing rod that was gifted to me from a friend who does house clearances.

I live in Leamington Spa and Bill “Nocker” Norris used to have the tackle shop I used to go to in the 80’s so I’d love to out this rod to use.

It’s absolutely immaculate and looking at the cork handle it looks to be unused.

My question is, is it an easy job to remove the current reel seat, strip the cork handle off and re-cork with the reel-seat in a position more suited for course fishing ?

I’d love to catch a decent Chub / Barbel on it on the W.Avon, in fact that’s my target above all else this season.

As the rod appears to be a fly fishing rod the reel fittings are in that position for a reason , essentially to balance the rod for fly fishing . I would doubt that the rod would be of much use for coarse fishing for Chub and Barbel as its not designed for that purpose ,it would be too soft an action . You could take off the current cork and reel fitting and fit a longer handle as you would have on a coarse fishing rod [ pre formed cork handles are readily available on E bay] , however doing so would in effect shorten the length of the rod ,not sure what you would gain from this other than spoiling its action as a fly rod . If your rod is 10 or 11ft + long intended for Salmon or See trout , it is possible to "convert" them to coarse fishing rods by fitting a longer handle and re ringing them . Out of interest how long is the rod ?

If it's your main target this season, too catch a chub or barbel on this rod, I would give it a go Gavin.
You won't find out what it's like untill you try 👍
