Float rod for Trent barbel

The Hi S rods are a major investment and as brilliant as they are for that exact intended purpose, i totally get why people shy away from them at £400 plus.

Keep an eye out on eBay for certain rods that come up occasionally.
Some to look for are…..
Shimano technium specialist float
Shimano ultegra spc
Daiwa conny xp
Daiwa spectron xp


All can be found for £60-150
I like long rods personally as they offer better control of large top n bottom floats especially when fished from a bank so for me 14ft would be the minimum and 15ft plus preferably
 
Free Spirit float rods have been proved a little fragile in my hands, but I have also been known as 'heavy handed', a 'klutz', 'accident prone' and a few other things besides.

To that end - if anyone has half a Hi S float rod, or wants to buy half - I'm your man...

Which model and I’m assuming it’s the lower half you have left John?
 
I think first I broke the butt, and bought a new but section, then I broke the tip the next time out. So yes, I have a butt section for a 13ft 2 piece variant.

Yep. ….. absolutely spot on.
I know a guy who won a good few swale matches with one of them 45SPC ultegras back in the not so distant day.
Heavy line, big floats, big fish. Made for the job
 
Had a waggle today with the daiwa connoisseur 15ft power float rod which on first impressions looks a capable contender, does anyone own this rod? Would be interesting to know how it stacks up against the acolyte plus 15ft.
 
The Daiwa Connoisseur 15' power is on my considering list. A mate of mine has one but hasn't used it yet. I do own a 15' Acolyte Plus and fairly certain that the Daiwa will be stronger than the Acolyte!
The Acolyte is a nice rod for chub roach and like but for me not capable of dealing with Trent barbel where let's face anything up to monster could turn up.
 
I can't comment on the power float rod but I use a standard 14ft Connoisseur specifically for barbel , matched with an Okuma pin . Can't fault it , have had several large Severn fish and had no worries throughout the fights . Roll on the new season .

Also had a play with the power mesh float but they only had it in 13ft, seemed to have a very similar action to the drennan specialist float that had the extending butt section (x-tension)
