    Unexpected 'cut-offs'

Had exactly this problem in a lake that is infested with signal crayfish. What bait were you using ?

    If you....

Agree with Drennan tench if I'm saving a coarse rod but Bruce and Walker 11ft 3in fly rod if it's trout!

    Am i going mad?

As a well known lager advert would say 'probably!!

Closed face reel vs pin vs fixed spool( open face )

Agree. I pick up older versions from when they were made in Sweden and are bomb proof.

Closed face reel vs pin vs fixed spool( open face )

For my sins, I do and have done since I bought an ABU 503 back in the late 60s to replace a horrid Mitchell! Superb for trotting, and has coped well over the years with both pike and carp. I just can't get on with fixed spool reels with a bail arm.

Why tench is most favourite fish to catch?

And if it's not swimmers and boats, it's carpets!

    Cardinal 55

I'm still using an ABU closed face 503 which I bought in Reading in 1966 to replace a Mitchell reel. As it was made in Sweden it still works perfectly and has landed many tench, a few carp and pike to around 15lb. As a penniless student, I couldn't run to the 505. Now picked up several more...

Beach fishing on uk coastal areas

Forget the leads and try free lining something like a sandeel. Great way to search out the bass.

    Crayfish nip-offs??

Sounds exactly right. My local water which houses some super tench suffers from numerous signal crayfish and what you have described has happened to me several times. They appear not to like sweet corn but avoid meat, maggots and worms!

Their mail order service is also very good. Usually arrives the day after you phone them but nothing beats a visit!

    Boddington reservoir

If by the concrete thing that just out is the one probably 3/4 of the way along the south dam, that is the outlet. Weir outlets at either side of the concrete peninsula where water can run over when full. If you walk on the path to the left, you go over the outlet to the original canal...

    Boddington reservoir

Michael 40 yards is much too far out. I usually float fish no more than 3 rod lengths out and draw the fish in with a little groundbait. Spam and sweet corn combo generally works well. I have seen the reservoir almost dry when BW dropped the level down about 25 years ago to net the fish to...

    Boddington reservoir

I fish it quite regularl. Easy to get 100lb+ of carp in 3-4 hours as long as you fish no more than 20yards out. No sign of barbel but get the odd tench and it is supposedly good for pike in the winter but have never touched one spinning. Most ledger much too far out and neglect the margins.
