I agree with unhooking in the net being the safest way to ensure no further harm happens to the fish. However, most of the swims I fish are either deep or have high banks so unhooking in the net is not an option. It’s about using the best and most fish friendly method for the situation you’re in.
Sticking a sharp piece of metal through a fishes lip is the way we catch fish - there’s no alternative to that. However, once hooked we should be taking great care that no other damage is done.
I agree with Paul. I too used to lay fish on the grass but for the last 30 years at least I’ve used a mat of some sort. I started off with a roll up one which I could fit on top of my rucksack and this year bought the Korum Fast Mat. It is a brilliant piece of kit which folds up to about a foot...
