    Chasing tench since lockdown.

The biggest I've had from this pit was 6.15 lb last May. Lovely extreme black colouration or the green strain in the photo. It's an interesting water. Mature with 5 Leney strain carp in it. Believed to have come from Redmire in the 70's.

I'm also fishing a pit for the tench Chris. A couple of sessions since lock down. Smallest 4lb plus to 6.02 lb. Haven't blanked yet. Just great fun and good scrappers. Not big by national standards but OK for Yorkshire. Lovely looking fish from the pits.

Free fishing, how to find it..

Good point. Most of that is down to bank access and ownership. Many tidal rivers are 'owned' by bodies such as the EA. From my book Angling Law. "There are some places where private fisheries exist in tidal water but these are very rare, and if a club has leased one it is very lucky indeed. A...

Free fishing, how to find it..

Darren. A good yardstick for free river fishing is whether or not the river is tidal (but not always...disclaimer lol). Most tidal rivers the fishing is free. Magna Carta. Access to the banks on tidal rivers does vary though. Don't be put off by tidal rivers as well. Anything within reason can...

    New Rod builds.

    That looks neat Terry.

    New Rod builds.

I've always had concerns about rod damage and crack-offs from line capture on the cast. Especially when launching 6-8 ounce of feeder distances on the big rivers. I've weighed up the pros and cons of using betalights and just avoid. Sight, feel and vibration (and at times Delkim on extreme low...

    Rod graphic removal advise

Nail varnish remover is basically acetone. Acetone is used to break down the bonds of substances such as hardened super glue. It does this very effectively and rapidly. I don't know for sure if it breaks down the substances that bond the carbon fibres together...but wouldn't be surprised. I...

Mass bankside tree removal by farmers?

In the late 90's, I came across a squad on one of my favourite rivers, of what were most probably NRA (not EA) employees. I was passing in my boat at the time, so went to the bank to enquire what was going on. It transpired that the 'squad' had been told to take all the trees down by a new...

    New Rod builds.

As recommended by Richard (above) I've been buying from Dave Lumb since 1997 and can highly recommend. He does has a reputation for predator rods, but his range also covers the specialist rods. He builds on Harrison blanks, and his web-site specifies the Chimera and Torrix ranges. I purchased a...

From what Boris Johnson was saying I take it as being as Wednesday that we can go fishing in isolation or with lock down family members . Depends on whether my local angling association opens up the pits. Scotland is in kind of a slightly different ( later) cycle to England, so if Kranky wants...

    Nash scope rods

I've two 10 foot Harrison's pike rods. At 10 foot they are primarily designed for bait fishing from boats, where at that length, it is an advantage. I've used them for fishing from the bank on the big reservoirs when I've a couple of boat days afterwards. No real difference in playing or casting...

Tackle that has gone up in value

That Minn Kota was a bargain Stephen. In my case the shop proprietor just didn't know what he had. I also bought King Carp for £2.

Tackle that has gone up in value

I picked up 'merry old dance' in a 2nd hand book shop for £4 a couple of years ago.

Andrew. Sounds like the type that flings everything on the barbeque. It happens on my local river every close season. Unfortunately little point in reporting it to the EA. It's blatantly ignored and kicked into the long grass. The locals have given up on the EA.

I was looking forward to the spring tenching. But for the greater good, I have no problem with abstaining from fishing, even if that means extending into the river season. Also the gym (even at my age) unfortunately.
