New rings for my beloved barbel rod - Help!

Hi,

I have recently broken the bottom ring on the top half of my Shimano Catana 1.5tc Classic Barbel rod, and the middle (enamal?) of the top ring on the bottom half of the rod has come out.

I love this rod, more than any other rod playing barbel on it is great fun due to the fighting curve it gives and yet retains enough power in the butt to give me an element of control - so I must save it! I could buy a replacement, but my pb 15.1lb came on this rod and if I can repair it I will.

This is where I hope I can ask for some help...

What rings do I buy? I would like to get the best ones so they last.

I have looked at th Harrison website and they give a great step by step guide, and I remember watching my grandfather whip so I think I can do this myself (and certainly want to try!).

Do I have to remove all the rings and start again, or just replace the missing one and damaged one? Is it better to replace all anyway?

Any other advice?

It didnt even occur to me that using double feet rings would effect the rods action, so I will replace with singles as the action is the main thing I want to preserve!

Now, do I change them all, or just the damaged ones?

Go for the K series guides, I rerung my Trent Barbel rods in the closed season. Its not rocket science either, if you go on the guides and blanks website, you will be able to source your rings, there is a sizing guide to show how to measure for the correct size rings. Also use FAQ's to show you how to do it from start to finish.

Hi Ben,

If you are edging along the road to only replacing the damaged rings, then you would need to carefully examine the remaining rings for hitherto unnoticed, less obvious damage....and then ask yourself why the two rings in question failed. Was it accidental trauma definitely confined to those two rings? Or was it more general damage due to hard use/wear and tear, meaning that more rings failing is perhaps only a matter of time? If you know the answer to those points, then you already know what you should do really :p If you have been honest with yourself and it is a viable proposition to replace just those two rings, then you need to either ask the manufacturer the type and size of rings used, or at least identify the rings by sight comparison. There is nothing worse than seeing odd or mismatched rings on a rod....if such things bother you that is....

If you decide it probably would be more sensible to replace the lot, then follow Jon's advice and all will be well.
