New winter jacket - wax or goretex

Julian Marshall

Senior Member
My old wax jacket is nearing the end & it`s time to look for a new replacement. Should I get up to date & get a goretex type or stick with the waxed? I do like something which is tough enough to get through jungle swims unripped.
I`ve spotted some Dutch army goretex jackets which seem suitable - anyone tried one of these or similar?
Hope this is fishy enough to be on this board!

As a general rule, I tend to keep our Lady Guides in Barbours -

gortex. grew out of the barbour/waxed jacket stage in the early 90's. rather be warm and dry nowadays[;-)]

Waxed cotton is only any good if you are doing something active in fairly rough or overgrown terrain. Mine gets used for shooting, beating and ferretting. It doesn't come fishing with me in winter. I'd rather wear Gore-Tex over the top of my down kit if it's cold and wet. Gore-Tex with base/mid layers if it's not so cold and wet.

P.S. Paul B, could you please send that particular lady my way. I feel that I may benefit from her guidance.:)

I've just picked up a brand new desert camo army jacket for under £30 delivered.

P.S. If you didn't already know, the Goretex membrane is good old PTFE (i.e. plumbers tape!)

Would like to get inside that girls clothes but anybody got ideas of a good two piece for a vertically challenged gent -30in inside leg? to fish most of the year.

So pleased you think so. In this age of falling standards, we try our best (even hardest) to maintain them.

It must be said that there are some remarkably attractive sheep around...it's just that I do hate having mud inside my wellies :D

So...all things taken into consideration, and given the choice...Paul's young lady just shades it for me :p

Very shortly I won't have the luxury of choice. It'll be Baaaarbara, Palmela or nowt.:(;)

I was thinking about winter clothing yesterday evening whilst out on the bank. It was 3'c and all I had on were a lightweight pair of longjohns, trousers, cotton t-shirt, lightweight fleece jumper and a jacket. I have to say that I was quite comfortable apart from my toes.
I think the reason for that was that the trousers and jacket were specifically desgined peices of outdoor clothing by reputable outdoor clothing manufacturers. The trousers were Rab Vapour-Rise - a trouser with a pertex windproof outer and a Polartec Powerdry inner and the jacket was a Mountain Equipment (ME) Fitzroy - a synthetically insulated jacket with ME's proprietary waterproof outer, Drilite.
I cannot speak for the army surplus equipment as I have never gone down that route, but for me, the outdoor clothing I use has been tried and tested. It costs, but it is not made to a budget.

For those who are on a budget and don't want to look like an extra from dad's army could always visit the discount shops, on line or irl, and see what they have on offer.
Allot of this specialist outdoor gear is governed by fashion, you have to look the part on the hills and on the piste, and last years must have styles and colours are often found on the sale rail at a fraction of there original cost.

As well as the clothing aimed at walkers his will also include allot of gear aimed at snowboarders and skiers. This is warm, waterproof and breathable, TKmax always has a large range which is added to daily, you may need to make several visits before you find what you want but the savings will be worth it.

As a final point it is worth investing in a decent set of underwear, they will last you for several seasons and make a huge difference to your comfort on the bank.

My advice to Staff, too. Problem is, I have to do the investing and it costs me a small fortune!
