Tench 2026

Those Tench are, as you say Neil, in lovely condition. Most of those I have caught from the larger lake/pond last year and the one this year have been dark and very old looking!
I wonder if maybe those you caught have come from another lake. I know the club have moved some from one of the gravel pits and they are vivid green beauties, bursting with health!
Well fished! 👍

I think you're right. Most of the tench I had last Spring were superb, predominantly dark brown/green with several, typically somewhat smaller, almost black:

Saturday's fish were also stunners, typically plump profiles and a much lighter shade of green.

Had my last session before a two week holiday. Over last three weeks I’ve had six sessions with only one tench blank. I consider that a good result. None of the fish were any great size. The largest fish I’ve heard of coming out of the lake is just over 5lb. Most fell to float fished red maggot. Two fish today with the best so far before everything died at about 10.30 am. I hope the reeds and lilies are up when I next get on the lake.

There definitely seems to be 2 distinct body types or bloodlines of Tench. The long, pale green variety and the short, deep bodied, stocky (and often dark) type. They are both found mixed in the fisheries that i fish and i always wonder if they are from different stockings. Is there any evidence of a known fish changing body shape from one to another or are they a different version of the same species originating from seperate past stockings?
