Centerpin reel angling channel on youtube?

speaking as a centrepin novice the topics I would seek out on various platforms would be: benefits of line coming off the top vs bottom/how to load with line/do I need backing/how much line to put on/playing a fish on the pin/different types of pins pros and cons
I would imaging there would be many like me not knowing where to start! Good luck with the project, will be interesting to watch it grow 👍

I bought an okuma Sheffield a few years ago and probably like many just couldn't get on with it being totally different to a fixed spool. One of the most frustrating things was not getting a float out to the opposite bank margin.
Should of given it more time to at least half master using a pin really.
If I got another one it would be a true pin but wouldn't know what a good beginner reel would be.Obviously budget plays a part.A bit of advice on my options would be useful. Also is a line guard Worth having.

Speedia narrow drum Trudex or Rapidex. Speedia has no line guard Tudex does have one and the Rapidex is a caged reel but line guards are a personal thing some get on with some hate them.

I taught myself to cast with a centrepin which is definitely the longest route to success but worth while if you don’t know any one to teach it to you.

It happens in stages or at least it did with me trying to master it myself and in the early stages, sure….. it ruins your days fishing!

The most difficult part for me was the holding the rig part. I couldn’t get my head around being able to hold and release the rig at the same time as lighting up the reel and because of this my Wallis cast was nine times out of ten done American style from a hanging rig. This put big limitations on the depth I could cast, it’s only through perseverance and the fact I won’t let things beat me that I managed to crack that last hurdle just this season gone.

Personally I don’t think it’s for everyone. Unless you can get someone to teach it and steer you where your going wrong and physically be there going over the sequence, then the only way to learn it is by sacrificing your fishing time teaching yourself and working out for yourself where it’s going wrong and that’s really frustrating.

You can’t secretly sneak a fixed spool in your bag to swap over to when you get your first tangle either or you get nowhere.

Line guards are not for me in any form or description I can’t stand them.
They probably are useful when starting out and learning but I’ve never liked them from day 1 personally.

I’m not an expert but I can give 1solid bit of advice based on my own mistakes. Don’t try and make it perfect.
The aim of the game is to put a float out where you want it. Just work on that.

You watch people like Ian do it and everything is so flawlessly smooth and perfect but that part gets better naturally the more you do it. I’ve noticed this in my own casting you don’t need to concentrate on purposely cleaning the cast up

Just focus on the fundamentals of getting the float out.

Anyway that’s my twopence worth from teaching myself and still to this day learning and tidying things up.

Hi Ian,
As a recipient of some really helpful advice from you on Ribble barbel fishing with a float, I will definitely subscribe, and look forward to learning more this coming season.

All the best, Steve.

I'll take a look Ian - apart from last season (when I used a fixed spool) I've been fishing with a 'pin exclusively for years. I use a Milltackle Barbel Catcher and/or a Fred Crouch Jet. And usually leger.
Good luck with the channel! I watch Youtube more than the tv nowadays.

Thanks Richard 🙂.
Like yourself, I never watch the tv anymore, well, I watch youtube videos etc on the tv is all.

I made this short vid earlier showing the floats etc that I like to use whilst fishing for chub and barbel....

Nice informative vid Ian, can see this growing into something special. When season starts get some videos of your tackle in action, feeding techniques and how to read the float as mentioned in this one….seeing it all in action would be very nice 👍

Thanks for those nice words Alan, appreciated.
I watched the vid back and to be honest, I know could have done a lot better. I missed out things about the better floats for fast choppy water etc, "which is the wire stemmed", and how they don't flatten out (lay flat on the surface) so easily as a carbon stemmed float when holding them back in fast choppy water.

I'm a total novice at the vids as I think is quite visible, hopefully ill improve a little as time goes on.
I actually have many fishing videos already, but the clubs i'm in have a non publicity rule. Also i'll have to try to hide any locations anywhere I go as I don't want to spoil other anglers fishing as well as my own.
Maybe I should have named the channel "the covert angler" lol.
