Tench rods.

Hi all. First post on here but regular reader on here of others posts. I’m after a decent set of tench rods for gravel pits ressies etc please? not looking for broomsticks to cast to the moon but something that can cast feeders etc but also nice to play fish on so a sort of all round rod. Been thinking free spirt, Harrison’s torrix chimera, drennan rods or daiwa rods 1.75 - 2.25 as I know all blanks vary. What’s people’s recommendations as tackle shops near me don’t have a lot in this field so hard to see. Any info great appreciated thanks.

Niall, At the other end of your budget you could maybe look at the 2lb tc Daiwa theory specimen barbel and tench rod? I have know experience of this rod but from some research 🧐 it sounds like it would be ok for tench fishing?

Yeah I’ve looked at them as well not seen in flesh though was thinking maybe the powermesh 2.25 as well I’m open to any rods really just want a decent set so £100-250 per rod I’m happy to pay but it’s hard not seeing any in the flesh so if options on certain ones seem good I’ll look into them further just too many to choose from isn’t there 😩😂.

I’m thinking of maybe getting the 2lb 4oz tc power mesh for some heavy river work? But I’m in no rush just yet, I think 💭 you would have to go second hand with the chimera rods? You’re going to be looking at £300+ per rod for the Harrison’s new mate.

The one thing that annoys me with the off the shelf rods I’ve seen is the single legged guides used on the top sections, as I don’t see the sense in the weight saving on rods that will be up on the rod rests? 🤔

Yeah don’t mind spending £300 for the right one either mate tbh. It’s hard do you go no2 or no3 gravel pits etc being weedy and maybe the odd carp might be worth the the no3 but if there’s some mint second hand ones I’d consider them as well.

Yeah the powermesh posts I’ve seen have been criticised for the guides have you seen the powermesh and no3’s in person what’s your thoughts? I come from carping background but knocked it on the head too busy and time consuming got kids etc so what time I do have prefer to be catching if I can rather than camping so barbel and tench are the ones for me now. So mainly used to carp rods etc.

I’ve had and used chimera no1 1lb 8oz lovely rod 👌🏻 and also had C 3’s but only used them for barbel fishing, the C3’s have a nice action fairly soft in the tip but gets more progressive the further down the blank I reckon you could stop almost anything you’d be likely to hook with one? Even though the biggest fish I caught with C3 was a 9lb + barbel it still bent quite nicely but could tell there was plenty more grunt if needed 👌🏻

Not seen the Daiwa’s in the flesh so to speak? But have had 2 C3’s and a Chimera snag and flood rod, both good rods and not poker’s as you might expect, that I got for bigger rivers but that fishing never came to fruition. So moved them on.

Brilliant mate thank you. What are they like compared to the torrix blank do you know?

That’s a shame but yeah if they are not being used it’s dead money just wasting away so best to get rid. I’ve had torrix carp rods and loved them so I’m a fan of Harrison’s.

Have you used both mate? What’s your thoughts?
Yes own/use both. I tend to prefer to float fish for tench but often also put a helirig feeder out on my peregrine GTI at same time. But if longer range and method feeders needed I use my C3s….that’s what I’ll be doing in a couple of weeks using some Tina berrie boilies on order, the pit is a carp syndicate and the C3s have coped well with mid twenties so far (very weedy pit too). I think they’re great rods and the peregrine doubles as my Ouse barbel rod and the C3s for occasional Trent trips

Don’t know about the Torrix blanks mate I’ve got a 11ft 1lb 12oz tc TW Lone Angler rod (custom Harrison blank) that I’m told is very similar to the torrix in that length and tc but that’s going to be a lot different to the higher test curves, you probably already know that the Harrison blanks vary greatly even within the ranges of blanks and most Chimera’s are different in action from one another and it’s the same variation within the Torrix range, someone on here will be able to tell you more? Mate.

Only thing is, I’m now needing them! As I will be going to the Trent this coming season 😁 but at the time they just weren’t getting used.
