Touch legering and rolling baits

I did exactly that.
After spending years sat being a pair of torrix’s pointing at the sky I had a whole season using nothing but my four piece Harrison with a modified tip section to make it a quiver tip coupled with the tiny daiwa 750ss.

Since starting the wandering lifestyle with 3ssg link ledgers and trundling meat I’ve yet to go back to the static approach. Once you get the hang of it, it’s an Absolute game changer - you’ll never go back.

I was looking for your old post about making quiver tip for 4pc Harrison, but couldn’t find it, could you let me know which tip you bought, it was a matrix one right?

What would the norm be on breaking strain of braid for rolling method then?

I use to love Spiderwire for my hooklinks, but not sure which brand is suitable for this sort of method?
Hi Julian, I used the 20lb original round profile power pro when I first switched over to braid but have recently gone onto the 30lb super 8 power pro for the extra abrasion resistance for the times I’m stactic fishing. I’ll add that when I first tried the braid I wasn’t too keen on it, and went back to mono for a while because of how much extra you can feel through the braid compared to mono it just didn’t feel right at first I was wanting to strike at every dink and donk, I’ve since returned back to the braid for a few years now and much prefer the feel to it. Hope this of help.

I should add that I generally put around 50 meters of line on my reels with some heavy fly backing or mono line to help fill the spool up, but still get some bedding in after landing a good fish or pulling against a snag, I just pull the line off then wind back on it only takes minutes.

Cheers Jim!
Thanks for your recommendations mate appreciate it! 😊👍

I remember once on the Kennet casting in anger upstream with my Seer Rover rod. More out of the frustration of not getting any bites all day! 😂

As the bait was coming back towards me, the rod lunged forwards, totally unexpected, hence I missed the bite, which angered me even more, and I didn't have anymore bites that day... That's my only experience with trundling baits! 😂

🤣 rather than trying to explain the method, I suggest you watch the old Matt Hayes footage on you tube of Trefor west trundling on the Teme and also having a read of “Barbel a lifetime's addiction” by Trefor west if you’ve got it? Much easier than listening to others describing it, which is a little bit different to how Ray Walton dose it from the bank, as I do it a lot whilst wading in the river to gain a better position on wider rivers such as the Severn mate 👌🏻

The principals of it I get, it's just putting it all into practice. But I will have a look at the clip you've mentioned.
It'll definitely help if your sight fishing in clear water too.

I started trundling in the early 80's, with lob worm on the Severn. I was frustrated being unable to cast a more or less unweighted worm across to the far side, and eventually (after talking to a guy in Fenwick's, in Wolves...remember them!) ended up building myself a rod on a fly fishing blank. With that I could reach the far side of the river at Quatford with an unweighted lobworm! All chub, but a fish a cast during the first hour of fishing!
N.b... it's THE most exhilarating type of fishing I've experienced, and much nicer with a Rolling Pin.

Yes it will help a lot if you can actually see the bait moving, the rivers I fish this is generally not possible, the key thing is to make it travel naturally and in a straight line and not come round in a ark to the near side bank, it’s really quite easy once you get the hang of it. I would definitely recommend practicing on a somewhat prolific venue such as the Severn etc then at least you know there’s a good chance of fish being present mate

I’ve never handled a Torrix 1.75lb rod but understand that they are sought after for this method, I use a tw stalker 1.75 at 11ft which I’m told is very similar? I also use Harrison 1.6 Avon for rolling/trundling 👌🏻

I agree with you Terry on the use of the center pin but as I don’t have a “rollin pin” yet 😁 (i would like a mk2 I don’t like the look of the new light weight version) I prefer a fixed spool reel when wading probably down to my limited casting skills with the pin, where I’m able to do it from the bank though it’s generally a center pin though 👌🏻

Jim, I have both 11' Trevor West and 11' Torrix. Their actions are very similar.
